Wow...you are spot on here.
Looking back on 1987, it truly was a great year for music, and for me personally.
A turning point in my tastes. From just hard rock/metal to my first forays into alternative, like The Cure, Smiths, New Order, The Cult among others.
Me too. I graduated from high school in '87. We always listened to classic rock and metal in high school. Beatles, Who. Zeppelin, Doors, Ozzy, Ac/Dc, etc.
After I graduated, I started branching out a little. The Cult was my "gateway" band. They were still kind of metal (talking about Electric) but they also had their alternative side. From there, I started listening to stuff like you described as well as The Replacements, REM, U2 and all the other great artists mentioned in the OP.

I was in 6th grade in 1987 and agree with the OP's list although I didn't discover a lot of the alternative bands listed until the early 90s. 1987 also had some memorable one hit wonders that sound good to this day. I'm not a big fan of modern R&B music but 1987 was also when R&B music was popular before the heavy hip hop influence. Incredible diversity of groups from all the great ones mentioned earlier groups like Simple Minds, INXS, Bon Jovi, Terrence Trent Darby, Beastie Boys, Run DMC with Aerosmith, Peter Gabriel and yes even pre controversy Milli Vanilli. You even had a legendary group like Pink Floyd putting out a great album (which contained two of my favorite PF songs...On the Turning Away and Learning to Fly)
P.S. anyone remember this random one hit wonder from the summer of 1987?
The System - Don't Disturb this Groove

1987 also gave us the power mullet of the lead singer of Icehouse.
Ice House - Crazy
Ice House - Electric Blue
2 great pop songs and big hits in 1987

You left off Bon Jovi's "Slippery When Wet," but other than that, great post.

Damn fine list for 1987, Awesome!
Up Lift MOFO Party Plan by the Peppers is still one of my favorite albums.
Metallica'a Garage Days Revisited was their last good album in my opinion, even if all songs are cover songs. I did like Justice For All, but not as much. I saw Justice for All tour with The Cult 1989

Slippery when Wet was released in 86. It is an album you could relate to in 87 though. Just like Beastie Boys licensed to Ill. Was a late release in 86.
I should just make a list of everybody bc even well known pop artists had their top releases that year.
Tiffany
Debbie Gibson
Jody Watley
The Outfield
Michael Jackson

Thanks for the list, Cdawg. I rocked 1987 all day at work yesterday, and will probably do it again today.
I hadn't listened to the J & M Chain "Darklands" in awhile, and it is really solid from start to finish (April Skies is one of the best songs from the 80's).
Along with the classics on your list (Electric, Document, Joshua Tree), I rate the Replacements "Pleased to Meet Me" and the Hoodoo Gurus as some of the best.

I think 87 was just right before their time. However, Egyptian Lover had an 86 and 88 release so it was probably his peak.

Hmm...I am no Timmy T, Stevie B, or Johnny O expert, but I could swear I was listening to some of those dudes' songs in the clubs in '87.

Maybe it was Shannon or Noel.
I'll research it and get back to you. They may have had single releases.

Dude, for sure, Noel. Silent Morning was all over the place in 1987 for a fact.
As was....you left off your list...Salt n Peppa's "Push It".
And, Debbie Deb "Lookout Weekend".

Technically, it came out in 1986...but I'm adding Especially for You by the Smithereens anyway.
Because to this day, I still play Behind the Wall of Sleep at least once daily.

Consider a 1987 bump.

Bump for the 1997, 1977, 1967 threads.
