LSU head coach Les Miles infamously stuck both feet squarely in his mouth early last month when, after touted 2012 quarterback recruit Gunner Kiel reneged on a verbal commitment to the Tigers and signed with Notre Dame, he took an unwarranted and classless cheap shot at the teenager.
“We needed a quarterback in this class. There was a gentleman from Indiana that thought about coming to the Bayou State,” Miles said Feb. 1 at the annual Bayou Bash, referring to Kiel. “He did not necessarily have the the chest and the ability to lead a program. So you know.”
Unlike Les’ low road, the 18-year-old Irish signee took the high road when asked about the coach’s blast. Kiel did, though, acknowledge that he will use the comments as incentive as he embarks on his collegiate career.
“You can’t really control that,” Kiel said over the weekend when asked about Miles’ comments. “I did pull out at the last minute. I still have all the respect for LSU. Their fans definitely understood. LSU is a great place, but it wasn’t the best fit for me. I’m a Midwest guy and I like to stay close.
“I’m just going to use that as fuel, but I’m not going to disrespect him in any way, shape or form. He’s a great coach and they’re a great team.”
And that is how you handle a situation like an adult.
Kiel, the No. 1 pro-style QB in the country according to Rivals.com, is currently in the midst of a four-way battle for the starting job after enrolling early this past January. It’s highly likely that head coach Brian Kelly won’t name a starter for the season opener until deep into summer camp.

kid is way out of touch if he thinks LSU fans were cool with it.

John Taylor sounds like a douche trying to get more readers. Les always speaks with open arms per say at the recruiting bash. Should he have said it? No. But one comment doesn't change the fact that Les is one of the class acts of college football

If this kid needs to use another team's coach's comments about him to get motivated, then maybe Les was absolutely right about his inability to lead a program like LSU's. I hope this kid knows that he'll never play for a championship team -- unless we are talking about the Insight.com bowl championship. And even that's a stretch.

Uhh, not so much.

Adults shouldn't go back on more than one commitment, one at the last minute, with no good reason.

Les Miles should have been more "in touch," with his closings, than to make a stupid remark, about a recruit. Les Miles brings the crap on LSU, and himself. It makes us look bad and stupid too....

Besides everything you just said, you're right.

If Kiel started at QB and faced LSU this year Kelly's head would undoubtedly explode from all the turnovers/ineffectiveness of his offense.
Notre Dame and LSU's Football programs at the moment aren't even close to the same level.
