Is this correct?...

If Vilma is suspended entire season-

a) Saints keep him, he does not count as a roster spot. They do not pay him his salary ($5.4mil).

Does the $5.4mil still count against the cap? Or can you keep him in essence for nothing?

b) Saints cut him.

I don't see any difference here. Subtract the salary and count the bonuses against the cap. Anything else?

If correct a season suspension looks like better in same cap impact but still having him around to make a decision on in 2013.

Doesn't suspension $ go to a charity or something? I'd like clarification on this as well.

I am pretty sure if a player is suspended, the cap hit is prorated for games missed/played. This could be why we haven't made any moves regarding Vilma, Lofton, and Hawthorne.

Is goddell going to release names today so the story plays out all weekend?

And it would be nice to be able to f'ing sign who we need too as possible replacements or does he just not give a shite?

Good question, I was wondering the same thing. Could Vilma "restructure" his contract before the suspension to get paid $0 for the 2012 season, and if he doen't get suspended the whole season, "restructure" again? I doubt the league would allow that, but anyone know if there is some kind of loophole in the system to where we wouldn't have to pay him nor it count against the cap without cutting him?

There is definitely no payment of salary (anywhere). That is real savings. I just wasn't sure on the cap implication. The fines definitely go to charity. Something called the Goodell Family Heritage Organization.

I know league fines do but I don't know about suspensions. I don't think so but I wouldn't be shocked.

makes sense, pretty shitty for an owner to pay for services not rendered basically.

There are some rules about the amount of how much reduction is allowable in restructuring.

$0 isn't possible either as there are stair stepped veteran minimum salaries. That's why some skilled oldtimers cannot latch on. 10yr vet min. is pushing $1mil currently.

Was also wondering this, and what do you know, typically useless Pat Yazwhatever mentioned it in his blog:

quote:

Once players begin suspensions, they don’t count against the cap. They’ll again count against the cap once they are reinstated, but their pro-rated salary for the games they miss won’t continue to count against the cap, because they won’t be paid for the games they miss due to suspension.

So it's different than a fine. I assume he's only talking about base salary, especially since he's talking about game checks, which is how the base salary is paid. I know when Vick got his suspension he ended up having to pay some of his signing bonus back to the Falcons. If I had to guess, I'd say there's a 95% chance that whatever guaranteed money he was owed will still count against the cap, but that due to his history and the relatively small amount that would be due, Benson won't go after it in court.

So, yeah, if he is suspended for the season, cutting him seems like it would be a formality.

but if that is the case then cutting him wouldn't accomplish anything capwise. If it doesn't count you can keep him around at no cost and not have to worry about the bonus hit on the cap until next year.

ps THRILL, check the What Is Brees Worth? thread/article

Oops, was thinking Vilma was in his final season of his contract. Yeah, given the tight cap space, if he were suspended for a season, they would most likely do just that.

If we keep him at no expense, keep him. The "PR" hit of releasing vilma and keeping Payton and coaches wouldn't be good.

thinking Vilma was in his final season of his contract.

yeah, $5.9mil for 2013. A year off might actually be good for him physically. Dunno the deadline for redoing contracts before the last year but he seems like a guy that could understand his mkt value and restructure much cheaper.

if he is fined an amount of $$$, that goes to charity. don't think it works the same for games.

Which leads to my tinfoil thought of the day...

Is Goodell waiting to announce suspensions to keep us from replacing our suspended players with solid signings?

Blue you bring up a damn good queston. Tried google but could not find anything definitive.

What little I found was- if the team suspends the player salary still counts toward the cap. If the NFL supsends the player it does not. So take it for what it is worth, like I said nothing definitive.

I'm waiting on the victim mentality douchebag brigade to answer this.

He really might be. He is trying to punish our organization for basically telling Goodell to frick himself. And this is a great way to do that
