how far can you see with these? do you know? i've seen some that I wasn't very impressed with, but this is the brand that the police carry i believe.

I've got the 500, and it's pretty damn impressive. I can shine the treeline across my yard at about 200-250 yards and count the needles in the pines nearly. Really bright light.

I got one at the sportsman show. $20. Not sure of brand or lumens. It shines 150 yard easily.

I have a Mag Lite XL50. It runs off 3 AAA. Has 83 Lumen with strobe. I consider it a pretty bright light.
If this CREE is 1,000 Lumen, I will be amazed. I almost want to buy it to compare the two. If anybody owns one, I would like to read their comments.

i know on that dino site cdan linked i saw some with over 1k lumens (like 3.5k, iirc). 1k will be enough though

We used the 500 for frogging when the spotlight burnt out, and we were still spotting them...

good substitute for a spotlight or not so much?

Not substitute, but a damn good backup or good to use in addition to it. I compared mine to my neighbor's 12V Q-beam hooked up to a battery when I first got it. The CREE K8 500 lumen shined the same distances as the Q-beam, but it just lit up a much smaller area. Still, pretty damn impressive.
I guess it really depends on what you're using the spotlight for. But it's far from a flood light unless you're within 15-20 yards.

Read the review on amazon. Most agree (anecdotally) that it isnt the 1000 lumens advertised. Check out Fenix Lights.
My Fenix TK-41 puts out 800 Lumens but also can be turned down to 10 which is super nice. It uses AA batteries and the runtime is excellent. Something like 10days on the 10 lumen mode.
