Star Wars episode order

I am planning on introducing my 9 year old son to the Star Wars saga, as he is a big sci-fi fan.
He has never seen any of it and I'm not sure what order we should watch the episodes to keep it interesting for him.
I was thinking of going in episode order 1-6, but I think the special effects would be disappointing by the time we got to 4-6. Plus those little surprises like when you find out Vader is Luke's father, and who Yoda is...etc, will be lost.
Right now I'm leaning on showing it to him how I watched it, 4-6 then 1-3.
Any suggestions??

I would only show him 1-3 for right now. 4-6 are clearly the better movies, but he's too young to appreciate them.
1-3 are definitely more suited for younger audiences.

Under no circumstances should Episode I or any of the prequels be the first Star Wars film you should show your kid.
I'm of the firm belief that episodes IV-VI exist, but another poster had a nice idea on the order
IV
V
II
III
VI
Start off with the original, then Empire since this keeps the twists in the story alive (although I'm sure he knows them already, knowingly or not). Skip Episode I because it literally adds nothing. Then go to Episode II (even though its the worst film of the saga), and finally III. This will actually make it a good twist that Luke has a twin and then he'll be shocked that its later. Then go to the conclusion of "Return of the Jedi".

Yeah now that I think about it, his kid is 9 and not 5. He can probably handle the originals.
So yeah, I agree. 4-6, then 1-3.

Trust me, I was a huge Star Wars fan when I was 5. I think I was able to appreciate Darth Vader force choking people. Plus the kid is 9, not 4.

I have heard this before, and is what has me in a quandary.
He is not going to be happy knowing there is more to the story though.
The parts about Luke's father and sister would also be ruined that way also

Luke and Leia being siblings was just a dumb move by Lucas' part. It really adds nothing but confusion and incest.
But no, do not show him the prequels first. That's an order.

Yeah I retracted my initial advice. 4-6, then 1-3.

Very good Idea...but he is going to wanna watch 1... I know it

I can see that now. I just like using that Lex vid whenever I can.

Yeah, the first book in the Star Wars expanded universe came out in the 70s right after Episode 4. It's pretty much unreadable today because there's a romance angle between Luke and Leia.

Not everyone hated Phantom Menace. I thought Darth Maul was pretty freakin' sweet

And he should watch it. It's so stupid how irrational peoples' hatred of the prequels are. Sure, they were annoying at times and not "great" movies, but people hate the frick out of them, and it's unjustified IMO.
Episode 1 is a solid, fun movie. Yeah, kid Anakin is annoying. Yeah, JarJar was annoying (though not as bad as people think). Etc. But there are some cool parts to the movie, and Darth Maul is one of the coolest characters in any SW film.
Just show him the original trilogy, then explain to him that the prequels were made and present those in order too. Let him make up his own mind as to which ones he likes and which ones he thinks are terrible (I bet he likes all of them btw). Certainly don't skip over any because some think it sucks...none of them "suck." And he'll especially like Episode 1 because he is who it was mainly aimed at anyway.

4-6 then 1-3. Why rob your child of the moment when Darth tells Luke "I am your father"? If you show him the prequels first, he will already know that fact and the film loses a lot of its power. You would have robbed your child of arguably the greatest plot twist in the last 30 years.

I would consider not showing him 1-3 at all. Has it done anyone any good?

Episode 1 is a solid, fun movie.
If you want to go 4,5,2,3,6 then 1 for funsies, go for it.
Whatever you do, start with 4.

This is an interesting concept, for a kid's first viewing. I'd likely go, 4,5,1,2,3,6. There's no real spoilers in 1 to ruin the 6 is there? Why not throw 1 in? It's a kid watching a kids' movie.

Because 1 adds nothing to the entire story.

show him 4-6 first and try to hide the fact that 1-3 were ever made
my nephew saw 1-3 first and doesn't like 4-6 because "they're too old." I'm gonna punch him in the nuts if he still says this at age 18
