So how do you think colts fans feel right now? Do you think they agree with mannings contract and that it was greedy or best for both sides? In 2 years you will feel differently. I love drew but he is asking for a little too much.
I don't give a shite about fans. Fans are stupid.
People need to take care of themselves.

Lets just be honest here..
it's 'cause he's white.
it's 'cause he's white.

He priced himself too high because he doesn't want to play here. Now he will hold out until they trade him.
Posted on 3/4/12 at 1:15 am to Honeybadger13
There is no reason for him to accept much less than he would get on the open market. However, I think he may willing to stay for a little less than he could get from a new team, but he should not accept much less.
If his employer is the NFL, he would merely be transferring to another department. How many of us would stay in our current department if there was much more money to be earned in another department, doing the same job?

Why, is he asking for money out of your pocket? He is in the middle of a business transaction. Tomorrow if his career ends for some reason then the Saints will dump him without batting an eyelid. He should squeeze them for every penny that he can and then some.
This isn't about business with the state and the people of Louisiana - its with a private firm that is motivated by profit alone.

This might be the most laughable statement in this thread which is saying something. There is a huge difference between 15 and 23mil. And this money needs to last him his entire life supporting atleast his current standard of living.
In about 6 or 7 yrs, Drew Brees will not be pulling in multi million dollar paychecks - or maybe any paychecks. He's doing the right thing.

So if you were in the top 5% of your profession would you settle for a salary in the top 40%?
Posted on 3/4/12 at 8:57 am to LSU0358
Really, he's so great that we should be willing to pay him $50M per year and hire the voodoo players at the league minimum for the rest of the roster spots. I mean, the city and Benson owe him. He's the best in his profession. Wouldn't you deserve the same?

Brees' contract will either allow the Saints to continue their dominance or put an end to it.
This is correct.
If Drew wants the Saints to continue to be about Championships and striving for Super Bowls, he would work with the team on the money. EVERYONE here knows he has earned and deserves as much as he can get within the structure of the team
If Drew wants to chase records and be Marino-like, he'll keep banging for 23 million and the Saints window of opportunity will close
so if your a "fan" pick the one that benefits the whole situation......
and If you pick the "Give Drew whatever he wants" angle, well you're not only stupid but a fan of a player more than a team and in my book that make you a a-hole too

The only problem with that statement isvthat Brees already has an offer to be in the top 5%. Sounds like Brees is wanting a deal that will put him in a league of his own.

As I understand it, he asked for $23 million and franchising him guarantees him about $15 million. But there is still negotiation?
He still has flexibility to do "Aikman-like" restructuring after a deal is done, or no?
Help my feeble mind.

[quote/] Let me hear it out of Drew's mouth and I'll comment on it. Until then, i'd be careful saying you lost respect for him based on what the media has "heard"

He fricking said before the end of the year that he was going to take a contract that would leave us with cap space for more players. Then what does he do? He tries to be the highest paid player in the NFL.

For all of you crying foul on Brees for trying to screw over Nicks, do you not realize that part of the problem is that Nicks, too, wants a ton of money that he really doesn't deserve? Hell, read some other posts on this board.
I'm gonna sit tight and not say a word about Brees just yet. As far as I know, he isn't threatening to go to another team or anything. All I'm seeing is that he wants more money, and I strongly believe there's a lot more to it than just that.

Kung Paw or Sweet and Sour?
I want a TEAM that has players all over the field to compete for Super Bowls
Love Drew Brees, hope he's leading the way to those Super Bowls but not at 23 million a year, sorry

I doubt any of us know enough about the negotiations or attempts at structuring the deal for us to consider either side to be totally at "fault".
As I mentioned in another thread, it gets tricky when you determine what a quarterback's "annual salary" is because of signing bonuses, guarantees (front end or back end), etc. Let's just allow the thing to play out.
I'll also repeat that there are reports, not denied by Brees' camp, that prior to the 2011 season, Brees was offered a deal that would have made him the highest paid player in the NFL. It was rejected by Tom Condon, Brees' agent. There various ways to look at that fact. Make of it what you will.
