Talked to a former band member last night. Chill bumps.

I asked her how loud the crowd sounded during the pre game piece. "Deafening" was her answer. She said the band is taught to count "1..2..3..4.." once they started playing otherwise if they listened to the crowd they would all get lost and be playing out of unison. I got chills down my back. She also said that when she was in the band each band member had to be able to walk off the formation, on the field without any other band member being on the field. In other words, you'd better know where you need to be.

All trained musicians keep their own time. I suspect this discipline is more important on a stage like Tiger Stadium on a Saturday night, but this shouldn't be a "chill-inducing moment". The rest is the story is cool, though.

I had a friend in the band back in the day, she was only in it for a year or two. She told me the first time she did Pregame, it was so intense and loud, she couldn't even play. She just walked the formations with her instrument to look like she was playing.

i sit about 3/4 of the way up the bowl and have for years. but i sat near the field a few years ago and the noise level there is dramatically louder i thought.

You know there's people in the band right NOW that frequent this site?
And the 1 2 3 4 count thing is not what we're taught to do... We're assumed to know something as elementary as that.
But yes, during some of the big games, you can't even hear yourself playing, which is insane.

The loudest Pregame I ever marched was the Florida game in 2009. I wish we would've won, but the stadium was rocking that night.

And like the other guy said, Florida 2009 was by far the loudest... but I didn't get to do that pregame because I was late to practice the day before.

Large bands on large fields learn to keep an eye on the conductor and/or drum major and assistants. They watch the conductor and visually time with him. If you listen to the percussion section, who may be 50 yards away, you will always be behind the beat.
When Mr. Swor was the director at LSU, for drills, he would require us, on game day, to go onto the field without music (which was to be memorized) and randomly select members and make them complete the drill without any surrounding members to guide off of.
If you made a serious mistake, he would replace you THAT DAY for the game that night with one of the people who were not marching half time that day (everyone marched pregame, but people with two left feet often didn't get to march half time). That meant that poor soul was learning the whole thing that day.
Still remember making a mistake in the Tulane half time and when I spun around a half beat late, Mr. Swor was glaring at me (but it was the last game and it was too late to do anything to me, lol.) We went 9-1 in '69 and did not go to a bowl game.
