I have to second the "Getting up and leaving" strategy. We've used it twice. The first time, we told the salesman, "We just can't afford that. Thank you for your time." We'd been there for almost two hours, and he finally caved. The second time, we actually left and the saleswoman called my wife's phone 30 minutes later and said they would do the deal we wanted. At that point, we said we weren't turning around unless she promised 3 years of free maintenance as a cherry on top. She did and we did.

I left dealership & went to
my office and called another dealership and told them what they were offering & if he could do any better. He said it was was “giving a whip to his dad to use it”. ha. Went back to dealership and got what I wanted. Standing up to leave helps also. This was before cell phones & buying cars for my kids.
