Question to those who have trolled the causeway

I know you want to troll at a speed between 1.3-2.3 mph, but do most guys use their trolling motor or just bump their motor in gear? I would imagine your trolling motor would get run down pretty quickly.
I was going to go today, but the reported 3-5' waves turned me off. I may go out tomorrow.

Yeah I was just talking to someone about trying to make a trip in the next couple weeks. I'm not familiar with Pontchatrain. I usually fish Grand Isle/Fourchon and have started learning Dularge.
I was just told something about that even with putting the boat barely into gear that it may be too fast. I was told something about dragging a drift sock of a bucket behind the boat to slow it down. I'll have to do a little more research.

look up eric dumas on la sportsman he has several videos on how to do it. he uses 2 buckets. trolls less than 2 mph.
