I got a buddy who refuses to watch War Horse and Rise of the Planet of the Apes for fear that the horse and main ape dies.
But yeah, I hate when the animals dies too. True Grit was pretty bad. Especially the way he had to go.

Any sort of suffering in a movie is difficult to watch for me. Even something as small as that scene in King Kong when that guy gets eaten by those giant worms. Painful to watch.
