Roger Ebert just put up his review of this. Gave it 2 1/2 stars. Basically it was made as a recruitment film. It plays out as such. Mostly action, very little plot. I would rather see "Hell and Back Again"

"Act of Valor" is gift-wrapped in patriotism. It was once intended as a recruitment film, and that's how it plays. The action scenes are harrowing but exciting. Lots of explosions and special effects. At the end, there is a full-dress military funeral, honoring three generations of warriors. The real action scenes in "Hell and Back Again" don't play like an action movie. I don't recall seeing a single Taliban fighter. One of Sgt. Harris' men is killed on the first day in the field. Harris is wounded late in his tour. Nobody saw either one of the snipers.

Exactly. I'm not expecting any Oscar worthy performances from the actual actors much less the S.E.A.L.s, but I do expect to see a lot of impressive screen shots and some intense shoot outs. If the trailer I posted is any indication of the final product, it should be a fun movie.

The liberal Hollywood media doesn't like the film. Color me not in the least surprised.

I will watch this film, love every minute of it, Respect the Hell out of the Men that made it, and give Ebert a big F.U. on my way in and out of the theatre.

This is a chance to watch Elite American Soldiers on screen. Count me in. I think that a S.E.A.L. playing a S.E.A.L. is much better than Charlie Sheen, Bruce Willis, or any Actor playing the part. The previews alone are awesome.

Those guys are so smooth with their weapons, it looks like they were born with them attached to their bodies...Hollywood Actor- not so much....

Maybe despite the fact that the actors are American heroes, and the tactical aspects of the action scenes are accurate, maybe it just doesn't make for a good "film" overall.

It is possible to have cool action scenes, and not have a good movie.

So it will be like most movies put out by Hollywood, just with better action scenes.

Does that mean, it's a good movie then?

Saw a sneak preview last night put on by Relativity Media here in Birmingham. The whole theatre pretty much agreed that there's a reason that Navy Seals are not actors, and it made me realize that even acting yourself in front of a camera is a hard thing to do. The dialogue is just brutal.

The action scenes are amazing, and it's probably the last movie that you'll ever see using footage of a real submarine emerging and submerging with no CG. That part is simply awesome. Overall, it felt sort of like watching someone else play Call Of Duty.

However, that's really not the point of this movie, IMO. It's a tribute piece to men who kick arse and take names so we can freely criticize their acting skills on a message board. I left the theatre happy that their story was told.

I'm not sure if they are getting any royalties for being in the movie, but if they are, then that's all the more reason to buy a ticket.

If it's entertaining, and I don't feel like I wasted my money when it's all said and done then yes, it would be considered a good movie. I have a hard time thinking I won't enjoy this movie for the shear fact they'll be doing authentic scenes shot in a really cool way. For those that don't want to watch a recruitment video, F you to. This is a 30 second recruitment commercial, and it kicks arse. You're telling me I can watch 90 minutes of shite like this (but better)? Fricking sign me up...

I saw it a couple weeks ago at a free screening done by the University. The script could have only had like 4 or 5 pages of dialogue. That's how little they asked them to act, and for good reason.

But since you go in expecting bad acting it's not a big deal and the action scenes exponentially make up for it. They tactics used in the movie absolutely blew me away, also knowing that the mean in the film have actually done these types of missions before makes it that much cooler.

Bottom line, if you are a red blooded American and you don't get an emotional prideful tear welling up in your eye at the end, there is something wrong with you. This movie hits all of those buttons and will make you want to stand up and cheer.

See, I would say no. I was entertained by Sucker Punch, but it's a terrible movie.

FTR...I'm not saying Act of Valor is bad, and I applaud the use of legitimate American heroes being used as the principal actors. I'm just saying that if it's not an actual good movie, it's ok to say so without it being a huge "frick you" to those in our armed forces.

I know what you are saying, and I agree. I absolutely love the movie, Commando, but it is an awful film (movie). The same can be said for movies like Mall Rats and In the Army Now. I guess my point is that if it's entertaining and you don't feel like you've been robbed then no harm, no foul. However, I know going into these types of movies that the depth is simply not going to be there, so I don't get my hopes up in that regard...

i guess so... but that doesnt mean the quality of the movie will be any better.

in fact, it's probably the opposite.

Commando and Mallrats are two decently reviewed films.

"It's not what a movie is about, but how it is about it." The notion some people have that a movie has to have unusual narrative/thematic depth to be critically well-recieved is one that is patently false.

And for me, something can not be entertaining and also poorly made. It's an inherent contradiction. Inept craftsmanship is not going to hold my attention in any way.

pfff haha, you're pitiful. I bet you actually think that liberals HATE America and would root for the terrorist in a movie like this. Give me a break

He gave it 2 1/2 stars, almost 3 (which is a "thumbs up" for him). Don't get your panties in wad because it's not THAT great of a MOVIE. Maybe these action scenes would be better in an informational medium like a documentary, where the accuracy and realism is the most important part, and not a driving plot.

It's getting 19% on rotten tomatoes: LINK /

I guess they're all just liberals too, amirite!

A whopping 21 people have voted on it. Seems legit. Good work, detective.

I'm sure. Especially from a "quality film" perspective, but I appreciate the effort and trying something different.
