Not sure if they are still there but these are all little mini-reviews of some movies I watched on Netflix before last March:

50 Dead Men Walking-true story that was set in the worst of times during the conflict that went in Northern Ireland. Ben Kingly, Jim Sturgess & Rose McGowan. Kingly at his very best. You will find yourself pulling for Sturgess' character. The IRA figures in this movie make the ones in Sons of Anarchy look tame.

The Assignment-espionage thriller that is a true story with Aden Quinn, Ben Kingsly and Donald Sutherland. Kingsly had the smallest role of the three. Quinn the largest Sutherland did the best j0b with his recruiter role. Was excited to watch this movie having just seen the previous, obviously similar, movie with Kingsly.
This one disappointed so I might suggest that if you plan to watch them both, see it first.

Holy Rollers-don't let the name fool you. It is not a comedy. Young cast includes Jessee Eisenberg, and Justin Bartha. It is the story of a young Hasidic Jew who smuggles drugs. You see him grow up while enjoying the spoils and enduring the pitfalls of his professi0n.

The Train-WWII version of Emperor of the North. It is Burt Lancaster fighting Nazis to keep a train full of paintings in France at the end of the war.

Clay Pigeons-A young, innocent looking Joaquin Phoenix having sex with every good looking girl in a one horse town. It's a murder mystery with Janeane Garofalo playing the investigating FBI agent. Vince Vaughn in a very believable cowboy role. Good if you haven't seen it in a while.

Deceiver-Tim Roth being interrogated after the murder of a prostitute by a cop partnership consisting of Chris Penn and Michael Rooker. Roth is taking a polygraph though most of this movie. It definitely has a twisty plot.

Vice-Dity cop movie that has you wondering "Who is the dirtiest". Michal Madsen, Daryl Hannah & Myketti Willamson. Hannah must have bee told she'd win an Oscar to dress up and play this non-glamorous role.

Who'll Stop the Rain-Good ole hippie, drug movie starring Nick Nolte, Tuesday Weld & Michael Moriarty. Great soundtrack pays while Nolte pegs the anti-hero role of his lifetime.

Iowa-Small town couple decides to cook meth to make enough money to get out of Hooterville. Plenty of partying and sex in this one. Staring Matt Farnsworth, Diane Foster and Rosanna Arquette playing Farnsworth’s mom.

Quid Pro Quo-Nick Stahl as a paraplegic public radio announcer who is trying to cover a story aabut "wannabe paraplegics". Not all of these wbp's are into it for sexual reasons but some seem to be. Weird one that can cause some discomfort, even if you are watching it by yourself.

No Vacancy-cheap motel life in sunny Southern California. Stars Christina Ricci and Timothy Olyphant in some pretty silly roles and situations. Lighthearted comedy includes hookers, drugs, pimps, health food nuts and other seedy characters who are all staying in an old motor court style one story motel.

Here are some I watched before May:

Lady Jane-It is a partially true period piece about Lady Jane Grey, who was Queen of England for nine days. This is a love story that stars Helena Bonham Carter, but it is full of political intrigue. She never wanted to be queen but after the death of the king who was her uncle, she is pressured into it. The leader of one side of the two reigning political parties moves to have her marry his frivolous, womanizing son, played by Cary Elwes, and take the throne. The real cause of Lady Jane’s predicament is religion. The right combination of love story and drama for a guy to watch and still enjoy.

The Young Victoria
-Yes, that’s two period piece love stories in a row. This one stars Emily Blunt and Rupert Friend as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert (that is THE Prince Albert In the Can, Prince Albert). This one is much more love story than political thriller. If you normally enjoy period pieces, it is worth the watch, especially if you need a movie for a date.

My Summer of Love-A different kind of “love story” that deals as much with class as it does with anything else. A wealthy girl whose family resides in a country mansion hangs out all summer with a poor girl from town. The rich girl’s parents are away for awhile leaving the whole house to these two young ladies. One thing leads to another and they become more than friends. Will it last past the summer? Watch it and see. There is some nudity and there are lesbian love scenes in this one.

American Psycho 2
-Mila Kunis from, That Seventies Show and William Shatner (Captain Fricking Kirk) “star” in the sequel that never should have been made. Shatner is a renowned forensics expert turned college professor. Kunis is one of his students who all are vying to become his next assistant. All of his former assistants went on to the FBI’s Behavioral Analysis Unit or at least to bit parts on Criminal Minds. So getting the best grade takes a back seat to surviving the semester. If you are the last man standing, you’ll get the gig. I literally fell asleep during this one. Maybe it wasn’t really so bad and I was just tired.

The Union: The Business Behind Getting High-A documentary that reveals pot as the top export for the Province of British Columbia. The production of marijuana in this area is so well known the product has been nicknamed “BC Bud”. Eighty percent of the $7 billion worth of pot grown in Canada is exported into the United States. The film maker interviews law enforcement officials, physicians, college professors, politicians, economists, pot growers, pot brokers, pot smugglers in a film that shows why its maker believes cannabis should be legalized. The medical people interviewed in the film express their belief that cannabis has never caused the death of a single human being while tobacco has killed millions. Law enforcement officials give evidence that shows how nearly all of the money being spent by the U.S. government, state and local authorities is being used to slow down the flow of marijuana, not harder, more dangerous drugs. The same law enforcement officials tell us most of the criminals in our prisons are also marijuana related crimes. If you think pot should be legalized already, your feelings for legalization will be stronger. If you watch it and don’t at least wonder if the legalization of pot might be a good thing, you just have your head in the sand.

Michael Collins-True story of the man who was both the Director of Intelligence and the Minister for Finance for the IRA. Liam Neeson, plays Collins. Aidan Quinn plays his second in command and Alan Rickman plays the future leader of Ireland they both are devoted to. Rickman is really good at being a very unlikable politician who manipulates his countrymen. Neeson makes all the hard wartime decisions, sends many to their deaths and battles Quinn for Julia Roberts. Who wins the war? Who runs the country? Who gets the girl?

Syriana-George Clooney as a CIA operative crossing paths in the Middle East with a young commodities trader, Matt Damon, sounds like something that might happen in a pretty good movie. Not really in this one though. The naïve character Damon plays is really there by chance. Because he is helping a young Sheik with some investments, he gets right in the middle of a hornets nest of intrigue. The movie includes U.S. involvement with the naming of a monarch to keep U.S. companies feeding from the Oil trough that is The Middle East. Double crosses by politicians, oil executives and clandestine operatives happen in layers to the point of the viewer needing to rewind or re-watch again. This movie has too many subplots to keep up with. I’ve been told that it helps to watch it a second time by people that love it. It may take some time for me to get my head around that advice.

Suspect Zero-Two FBI agents played by Aaron Eckhart and Carrie-Anne Moss are on the hunt for a serial killer. Eckhart’s character figures out the mobile killer they are searching for has been killing people for years all over the country. Ben Kingsley is a suspect that they investigate and eventually catch up with. Who is the killer? Why are both children and adults being killed? What do Eckhart’s and Kingsley’s characters have in common? Pretty good crime drama with good actors in pretty good roles.

Gun-Detroit’s newly made, “largest gun runner” Rich, played by 50cent, adds a recently released from prison old friend, played by Val Kilmer, to his crew. Rich has recently taken out his biggest competitor and hooked up with non-stop top grade product that he cultivated through his a lady friend, played by AnnaLynne McCord (Wow!). Paul Calderon and James Remer are the detectives that plan to take them down. Danny Trejo makes an appearance during a sell. Who can pass up 50cent, a better looking version of a younger Sharon Stone and Val Kilmer together shooting it out with Trejo? It was no where near as bad a movie as the critics said it was.

These were all in the Netflix thread at the top of the board. Sometimes people will post in there to tell everyone about a movie.

here are some more with Netflix links that I watched between May and July:

The Jacket (2005) Adrien Brody as an Iraqi War vet who comes back to the states kind of messed up and is committed to an insane asylum after being accused of murder. Hitch hiking occurs multiple times in this film and we all know it’s something one just shouldn’t do. Did Brody’s character kill someone or not? Are the treatments working? Watch it to find out. Also features Keira Knightley in a really creepy role. Plus Kris Kristofferson and Jennifer Jason Leigh as the mental institute doctors.

Coastlines (2002) Timothy Olyphant and Josh Brolin star in this crime drama. Olyphant’s character gets an early release from a Florida prison and comes home to collect a large sum of money from his drug dealing partners. The said partners are completely surprised by his arrival, promise to get the money to him ASAP and then start trying to kill him. He ends up staying with his old best buddy Brolin, the local, not so on-the-level (it’s rural Florida after all) sheriff. Brolin’s wife, played by Sara Wynter is also an old friend who starts having relations with TO’s character when Brolin and their two little girls are out of the house (it is rural Florida after all). Does the sheriff protect his old ex-con friend? Does he find out about the hook ups with his wife? It is steamy down there in rural Florida.

The Good German (2007) George Clooney and Kate Blanchett are ex-lovers in this Noir failure. It is shot in black and white and really looks great but by the end you think you may have seen some kind of satirical Casablanca. It is set in occupied (by the US and the USSR) Germany at the end of WWII. Clooney’s character, an Army Captain, wriggles his way back to Germany after the war to find Blanchett whom he had an affair with while running the AP bureau there before the war (must have been like Cary Grant & Rosiland Russell in His Girl Friday). He finds she has become a prostitute and is currently the girlfriend of his assigned driver an Army Corporal played by Tobey McQuire. Blanchett’s character was using Maguire to try to get out of Germany but why is her getting out important enough for people close to her to be murdered? Is she in danger? Is Clooney’s character in danger? Who gets what part of Germany? Who gets Blanchett?

Stone (2010) Edward Norton is “Stone” Creeson, an imprisoned arsonist with a beautiful wife, Lucetta, played by Milla Jovovich. Robert De Niro is Jack Mabry, his parole officer. Stone wants out of prison. Lucetta his very hot wife also wants him out. Mabry is an old, one foot out the door PO. Norton’s Derrick Vinyard character in American History X would hate Stone because he is a corn rowed thug who rivals Gary Oldman’s Drexl character with his hoodness. Lucetta has snakes in her head to go with a lot of bubble gum psychology for why Stone is the way he is. She explains it all to Mabry when he comes over to see her at her home. What, besides talking about the hubby, goes on with the PO and the convict's wife. How much does Stone know about? Who is in charge of this triangle? Can Marbry make it to his retirement?

My Name is Nobody (1974) That’s right the old Terrance Hill/Henry Fonda Spaghetti Western. Fonda is Jack Beauregard , the fastest gun in the west and Hill is Nobody, the new kid in the gunfighter game who wants to make a name for himself and send Beauregard out with a bang. This one comes with an Ennio Morricone (The Good the Bad & the Ugly, Once Upon a Time in America, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Untouchables) soundtrack. Beauregard and Nobody are great together in every scene. Lots of humor, a great story and lots of gunfighting in the Old West. Who goes out on top? Why does Nobody always seem to be smiling? What makes Beauregard laugh? Who is the faster gunfighter?

Powder Blue (2009) Jessica Biel, Ray Liotta, Eddie Redmayne, Forest Whitaker
This one was one of those movies that seemed like three or four different movies going on simultaneously. There was some crossover of the different stories going on. Even though there is one scene with him interacting with one of the other main characters in the movie, I never did figure out what the parts with Whitaker had to do with the rest of it, especially the part where he deals with a transsexual prostitute. Damn that guy gets himself into some odd roles! His part is really good but seems unnecessary to the plot. Biel, who plays an extremely talented stripper, is the main character. Liotta is an older ex-con that she meets at her place of employment. Redmayne plays a young undertaker who is lucky enough to be the guy that just happens to find her lost doggie. The beginning of the movie is all of these characters going through their really lonely day to day lives. Chance meetings between them and the relationships that develop fill the rest of it. Does someone get the very sexy girl? Is every female or person that dresses as a female a whore? Was that really Patrick Swayze doing a great David Lee Roth imitation as the owner of the strip club?

I still see her as being the age she was in After Hours or Desperately Seeking Susan. Both of them are from 1985.
