Want a dog, need suggestions

I want to get a new family dog. I had a German Shepard along time ago and I loved the breed but I had a hard time training her to be social. She was also a little rough with the kids (babies back then).
I've read and looked at a ton of breeds. The wife and I think that the black and tan coonhound is THE dog for us. Our first choice was a bloodhound but they're just a little too big.
Anyway, I've looked around locally and googled breeders for this dog and can't find any close. Anyone here know anyone that has these dogs that could point me to a breeder a little closer than Arkansas and Mississippi? TIA

Intelligent and wants to play
Good temperament
Social/good with kids and other pets

if you want a big dog a Lab would be a better choice
If you want smaller get a cocker spaniel, spring spaniel
by the way were your Sheps male or female?

The OB is the right board for everything! 
First, why a hound? They're really not a traditional family dog and they tend to have a "hound" odor. Don't get me wrong, I love hounds, just wouldn't be my first choice for a family dog.

Wouldn't be my choice, but have seen some cool ones. I take it back. Never seen a cool Cocker Spaniel.

I know theres a lot of support for cur dogs on here, but they can be very independent and bull headed. They have been bred to be that way for years due to their jobs.
You're correct, they can be fiercly loyal family dogs and usually are. They can also be very overly loyal to the point of being aggressive. That can sometimes make for some sticky situations.
Before anyone gets defensive about their BMC, I think they are really great breed with some great AMERICAN history. Love em. Wouldn't be my first choice for a family dog, however.

I had a Catahoula Cur great dog, tough as nails could whip any dog in the neighborhood, he backed down from nothing, dobermans, pits, hogs, could drop a bull on his back in a minute (grab the bull's nose and flip him to the ground)
but I was a teenager and I would say he would have not been great with little kids
great pet, whip anything or anybody that got close to me or my brother

45lbs... best, most athletic, smartest dog/breed I've ever owned.

Edit: and if cows don't usually hurt them with kicks and stomps... I think he'd do fine with your youngin.
Edit2: while we are the subject of kids... I have 5. My 13 year old skateboards with him. My 10 year old and I hunt squirrels with him. And my 4 year old daughter uses him as a training dummy to practice her cage fighting moves.

As a general rule, hounds make poor pets. They want to work, and laying on the couch isn't work. I suggest going another route. Many people buy hounds because of looks and wind up very unhappy because they are not good pets.

Temperament. I have a two year old boy now who is really big and pretty rough and tumble. So I want a dog who he can't hurt and vice versa.
Before anyone says I need to teach my boy better or he's too young. He's being taught to be gentle with my mom's morkie. I also want a larger breed dog to keep people out of my yard when my boy starts to play outside by himself.
As an inside/outside dog, hounds seem to be a great choice. Calm inside, active outside, intelligent, light shed, easy grooming, etc.
The Shep we had was a 80lb female black and tan.

Like the Heeler suggestion. Cool little dogs.
To the OP, here's a EXCELLENT idea. The OT had a post about shelter dogs that had until Saturday to find homes. Might check it out. I'm not one to frown upon people buying pure breds, but if adopting is something you have thought about there's a bunch of great dogs out there.

My suggestion would be something like a lab, golden retriever, boarder collie, maybe a bmc. Only if you're set on purebred.
I personally prefer mutts.

Surprisingly enough, hounds don't always have great temperaments and can be extremely hyper. If you do choose to go that route, don't get one from working stock. Not saying a hound is a no go, just do your homework. And again, not saying a cur is a no go.
Just throwing a suggestion out there, but what about a boxer?
And I strongly support the lab suggestion, but like any breed, it's all about breeding.

I have a hard time going to shelters and looking at these animals. I have no idea what kind of abuse or neglect they had coming up. We got a a little guy from the shelter once and it took forever to get him to just let us pet him. He bit my children a few times. He was a digger and it was almost impossible to keep him in a fence. He would run out the door and down the street and it would take an hour to get him home. He made one last escape and we got a call from the pound that they had our dog in the freezer.
I also need a puppy because we have a young cat in our house and he/she will need to be introduced to her.

After seeing the boykin spaniel thread, that or an Irish setter will be my next dog. Those are beautiful animals.

And again, I LOVE the breed. Great great history and great dogs. I had one when I was a kid.
Best dog I ever owned was a lab. Best dog me bro ever had was a boxer. Just too many great breed out there to be a "right" answer.
