Defense has talent... the scheme failed us

Its about quality not quantity... If you blitz 35 times a game but only get to the qb 5 times, all youre doing is putting your secondary in stressful situations! another thing I dont like with the "scheme".... our cornerbacks always seem to be 10 yards off the WRs!!?? THOUGHTS?

The defense is littered with first and early second round draft picks. You have to assume the talent is there, or we missed on a bunch of guys.

Saints missed a bunch...........Passed on a load of impact LB's. Saints have brought in tons of DL that haven't panned out

The players failed more than the scheme IMO. No linebackers or safety who can cover a TE when we play Shockey, Winslow & Gonzales twice a year and Davis in the playoffs. Harper should be a guy who splits time at SS, Shanley shouldn't be on this team and the defensive line (besides W Smith) hasn't done a damn thing.
For the first time as a Saints fan, we have good CBs but our d line and LBers suck.

I though blitzing damn near everyone and leavin Jenkins one on one with V. Davis was a terrible call. The Saints should have sent Jenkins also, there was no point to have a wasted man on the field.

Talent-wise...
Greer is the 1 standout player.
Vilma and Will Smith are solid NFL starters.
Porter hasn't progressed. Robinson flashes more physical potential but he's still a TBD.
Sedrick Ellis and Shaun Rogers have been meh, no other way to say it.
Cameron Jordan is a rookie, but plays like a 3-4 DE.
Jo Lonn Dunbar is undersized but had a good season by his standards. Shanle is a liability in coverage and unspectacular in the box, but can hold his own at the point of attack. Still not good enough- we've epically failed to upgrade the position since Fujita left.
Jenkins has an abysmal season relative to his output last year. Harper is a great blitzer but fails the safety test in every other regard.
So in summation, I'd say the "talent" on D is about average by NFL standards.
GW's scheme is ok in theory, but it is designed to get turnovers (to get the ball back to our high-powered offense)... we all know those turnovers didn't come so essentially the scheme failed.

Every player misses open field tackling but Roman his a great tackler at his position.
His coverage skills are bad but we all know that. Jenkins has played worse than Harper in my Opinion but Harper is the scape goat.
IT wasn't Harper getting burnt the last two drives by Vernon. It was Jenkins. Jenkins who is supposed to have CB cover skills was getting burnt. Jenkins who was a cornerback coming out of college had 0 int as a FS this year.
At least Harper plays SS and they are not supposed be as good in coverage unlike Jenkins.
We know what we getting with Harper the problem we getting nothing out of Jenkins. I still feel Jenkins will be a good player but he had a down yr. Hopefully next year he'll play better.

The Saints are going to have a new DC, so, time will tell, but, here is my strong opinion on the topic:
The problem was not G Williams' schemes, but, rather, the Saints front four lack the capability to generate any kind of pass rush alone.
They lack the capability/talent to generate a pass rush. Because of this fundamental defect, the Saints DC can only create a pass rush by blitzing/bringing extra bodies towards the QB.
When your DC finds himself in this situation, you are going to take risks in the secondary because your opposing QB will have some man to man matchups downfield.
. . . and that's the story with that.
PS How do I know I'm right? Mike Detillier said it this morning on WWL with Garland Robinette.
