My First Geaux to Hell Moment.
In 1958, my dad took us boys to our first year of many in Tiger Stadium. During the Ole Miss game the crowd was standing , Chanting "Geaux to Hell Ole Miss."
I soooooooo wanted to join in, but being a Catholic alter boy, I was thoroughly consumed by guilt.
I devised an alternative that I was sure would save me from the fires of hell, just in case I died before getting to confession later in the week.
I started yelling "Go to hello, miss! Go to hello miss" I saw dad nudge the guy next to him and point proudly to his young son cussing those damn Rebels. So I continued with gusto though the night.
As I mentioned, I had a healthy Catholic guilt angel sitting on my shoulder, so I decided that , just in case, I better confess my tactics. I waited nervously during that time in confessional,as I heard the muffled sounds of another ongoing confession, then....the little door slid open.
" Bless me Father , for I have sinned. It has been one week since my last confession."
"Yes, my son. And what are your sins?"
Well , Father I kinda cussed at the LSU game."
I thought I noticed a slight grin through the brass screen that separated us.
"And what did you cuss?"
"Well, Father, all the adults were yelling "Go To Hell , Ole Miss, but I said Go to hello, miss."
The priest turned away and covered his mouth, but he couldn't hide the convulsions of laughter that racked his body.
"Alright son, is that all?"
Yes Father."
"Go now and say 3 Our Fathers, 3 Hail Marys, and a good Act of contrition."
I was overwhelmed. These were the same as any venial sin! Cussing Ole Miss was not an act damned by Hell fire!!! Surely a sign that God Himself was a Tiger Fan!
And Geaux to Hell Ole Miss, Geaux to Hell!
