I feel all grown up

Now I can't touch this money until I am 59.5 years old

3% is pretty weak, but starting right away without having you wait a year is pretty good.

Are you also starting a ROTH IRA as well, to put aside another 3% or so?

To be completely honest, I don't know much about all this shite. I was a history major

I am a quick learner though.

Should I put another 3% into a Roth IRA? I hear that is the way to go.

And after a year our 401k match goes up to 9% then 12% the 3rd year.

Doesn't hurt to take the tax savings from putting a little more than the company match into your 401K. I am putting ~15% in and my company only matches 4.5%.

If you can afford it, I'd put the full $5k a year in (~$416 a month)

If its going to match 9% that is great. Put in the max you can if you can live without it. Wish I would have done that at your age instead of waiting.

as soon as you are comfortable you should put around 10% in... max out your 401k every year

Don't go dumping more than the company match in a 401K until you have someone knowledgeable look at the investment choices.

Save $10,000 cash before you do anything else. Keep it liquid.

After you save the 10 grand open a Roth IRA that you have control over if your company 401K investment choices are mediocre.

It's with Fidelity and they are high risk at first. I can take control if I want, but a couple people already in the company I'm good friends with told me it's done really well the last few years.

I think I might put 3,000$ into the Roth IRA a year to start out because I am just not comfortable giving up the full 5K right away. I don't make enough I don't think.

I am not sure how they work though. Which bank/investment group should I go with for the Roth IRA?

Actually you DO have access to your 401-k funds, but with some limitations.

i put 10% in my companies 401K, they match first 4%, plus put an extra 3% of my yearly salary in it for retirement.

I also put $3000 a year in a roth IRA.

currently my 401K is

15%-stable------up 1.3% year to date
60%-moderate----up 3.5% year to date
25%-very aggressive--down about 2% year to date

I like your plan.

But who should I open up my Roth IRA with? I don't know much about it...
