Blooming onion

It is essentially just onion rings. I dont think you can pinpoint who invented it.

On wikipedia it says Outback claims it did and it started in 1988.
Copeland's has had it for as long as I can remember and they started in 1983.

Russell's Marina in New Orleans invented it. Outback menus used to (may even still) even credit it saying so. Copeland first ran with it in chain restaurant form, then Outback did.

Considering that Outback claims to have invented it I highly doubt this. Kinda one of those things where I bet more than one place was making them without knowledge of the others.

Do a search, Outback's menu used to (and again may still) state: an outback ab-original from Russell's marina bay.

Tim Gannon, who is one of the three founders of Outback was the one that started the onion cutting process. He was also the chef at 4141 and he worked at Copelands. We use to cut the onions by hand in the old days by putting a ramekin on the core and slicing it with a paring knife.

So Copeland's likely had it before Outback?

anyone ever had to make one?

At Copeland's we had to throw it in the oil while spinning it to make it bloom out.

It was the Marina, Copelands took it from there and then Outback and Chilis ran with it, but was invented in New Orleans.
