I think they can play together. But it is a combination of two things:
Poor relationship, even if it has been patched recently.
The depth at Barca has caused Villa to ride the pine. I don't know how he feels about this.

Not for 20mil, but maybe 10-15, I'd absolutely be fine with Arsene taking a gamble on somebody with his talent.

I think I'd believe a poor marriage with Messi sent him to the subs before depth. If the addition of Cesc sent David Villa to the bench, then I rated DV too high.

I was under the impression it was due to Villa having to play out of his preferred position, out on the wing, to accommodate Messi playing through the middle...

There are rumors that he and Messi haven't spoken to each other for over a month.

don't a lot of the Real and Barca players understandably hate each other though, and still pwn everyone internationally?

I've read that too... I think Villa would jump at a good opportunity to play as a CF somewhere... Whether that is at LFC, who knows...
Many of his fellow countrymen have a hard time fitting in when Messi is playing the false 9 for Argentina...
Two thoughts, one post, it's late...

Please god let it be Chelsea. We'll throw in Torres...

we can haz?!?
There have been Villa to Pool rumors. Unfortunately, I don't see us getting him. First, because of the possibility of no CL. Second, because we won't beat out Chelsea in a bidding war.

And Sanchez. Villa has also been out of form this season with only 5 goals in 15 appearances, and 1 assist. Compared to:
Messi - 17 goals, 7 assists, 16 appearances
Cesc - 8 goals, 5 assists, 12 appearances
Sanchez - 5 goals, 1 assist, 8 appearances

Hasn't he done this for Spain though to accommodate other strikers?

Pipe dream admittedly, even for me.

If he was the only player we were going after, maybe. But now that we have to replace Lucas, I doubt we will afford 2 world class mids.
IMO, Barca won the European Cup with DV and Messi playing together...with UTD and City put of the CL, they are a cake walk with the squad they have. He may not go anywhere.

I don't even know if the owners would go for it. 30 years old, relatively high price tag, high wages and little re-sale value. He's a good striker, but maybe not the investment Liverpool need.

We all win if that happens.

And Sanchez.
I'd guess it's Alexi Sanchez more that anyone else. He's better than Villa right now and a lot younger. If Sanchez had gone to the EPL like Aguero and Suarez I would imagine he'd be the more hyped of the three.

Does anyone remember the good ole days of 2007/08 when people wondered who was better between Adebayor and Torres?
Posted on 12/14/11 at 11:43 pm to wm72
Well Cesc is actually getting to play pretty much as a CF in most of Barca's matches. Not even Villa displaced Messi as the CF/false CF. That probably chaps his hide a bit. This reminds me, great read from crazy, erm I mean Zonal Marking on the evolution of Cesc.

Cox overlooks that important period at the end of 2008/09 when we still played a variant of the 4-4-2, more like the pre-2005 4-2-3-1, the "Bergkamp" role. People don't remember how mightily Fabregas struggled with his back toward goal, pinched between the midfield and the defense, often with a DM marking him tightly. Cesc had just come back from injury, and we'd grown accustomed to playing through our wingers (which coincided with Arshavin's mercurial form). Cesc was always quick with the ball at his feet, but he now had to be quick without the ball. This transformed him into a deep-lying forward in positioning, though in truth he would come as deep as he needed to receive the ball, acting as a playmaker in every instance. This is where he is the most dangerous player in the world, as he is able to create scoring chances from literally any position on the pitch. And he developed that ability in that one half season playing as a withdrawn striker/attacking midfielder. His 2009/10 season was superb, as was his 2007/2008, and in both seasons, if not for crippling injuries and poor mentality, Arsenal should have won something.

Had forgotten about that. Totally agree.
It is pretty incredible the success he's had all over the pitch.
