In a plus one, I think it would be 1 v. 4 and 2 v. 3 in a semifinal, then the winners would play for the ship. So it would be LSU/Stanford and OSU/Bama...in other words we would end up playing Bama for the national championship anyway!

A seeded plus one system would work. #1 and #4 play
And #2 and #3 play. Winners play for it all. rotate the matchups between bcs bowl sites each year for fairness.

As much as I hate agreeing with Gary Danielson, I really liked his 6 team playoff where the top 2 get a bye week and the number 1 team plays the winner of the lesser ranked teams of the top 6.
Would be a good medium btw playoff system and the every game counts system

A 6-team playoff would discourage teams from playing tougher non-conference regular-season schedules. Could you imagine if there was a 6-team playoff the last couple of years? Teams like Boise St. and Houston and TCU could have gotten in every year for literally playing no one, while a 1-loss team in the SEC has to sit and watch. Sounds pretty unfair to me. However, a 6-team playoff would push the inevitable late-season debate away from the top 3 teams and push it back to the 5-8 teams.
