re: What's the story behind Mathieu's recruitment to LSU?

wrong. nobody bitched after he left the tennessee camp. While we were recruiting him prior to an offer people were skeptical but after he blew up in knoxville everyone jumped on the bandwagon and it was nothing but roses in the "mathieu commits" thread on the RB. I wish I could find the "morris claiborne commits" thread. that would be pure entertainment.

Not true...lots of complaints when he was offered. I mean, he was an undersized 'no name' with a rather pitiful offer list.
maybe some people were, but they got shut down pretty quickly by anyone who follows recruiting at all. Mathieu was tearing the camp circuit a new a-hole all summer. Nobody saw him being a heisman candidate as a true sophomore or anything like that, but there was no outrage at extending him an offer.
Regardless everyone is glad that TM is here, and if it motivates him to play with that "disrespect" angle then fine. I just don't think its really there.
Claiborne got offered out of nowhere it seemed, and a lot of people didn't have a clue who he was. People were very upset at first with him. the season LSU was finishing up when he committed didn't help his reception either.

hilarious how if you follow recruiting you're "stalking high school kids" but when the true freshman out of nola sacks the UNC QB in the first game of the season its "OMGZ who is that guy!!??"

While the bitching wasn't as intense after TN, it was still there. It wasn't as intense as the Mo C bitching was, but it was there, not just here but on other boards (and in real life) as well. And the bitching BEFORE the Tn camp was nothing to discount...it's a little disingenuous to suggest that everyone in LSU's fanbase was just peachy cool with Mathieu during his recruitment, IMO.
But as I edited my other post to add, those years were slap in the middle of the height of 'negatiger' doomsdaying. That added to the whole 'this recruit sucks' bitching going on that year. There were a lot of fans who would have honestly bitched if we'd have recruited Peyton Manning's clone during that stretch.

FINE. just sayin mo was the very definition of under dog. What mathieu has done thus far anything short of 5 stars his sophomore year of high school wouldve put him in the under rated category. Mo's commitment announcement was a turd in the punch bowl that couldve paralleled with offering a chunky white long snapper from deleware.

he attended camps at alabama and tennessee. He got an offer from LSU and well the rest if history.

Would def agree that the Mo announcement equalled a turd in a punch bowl. Good times in restrospect.

all that stuff is blown out of proportion as far as i'm concerned. He went to the UTenn camp and beasted, then came to the LSU camp, got his offer and committed. He was a 4 star, and the top rated rivals cover guy that year. He didn't get those other offers because he was rock solid to LSU because of Wilson being on the staff. Anyone else would have been wasting their time. Look at Eric Reid's offer list:
LSU
NC State
Tulane
Stanford
Tennessee
Not quite like Mathieu's but similar. When you commit to LSU or anywhere else really early nobody is going to put the full court press on and waste their resources. TM7 is fantastic player who came in with high expectations. If anybody wants to run with an underdog story its Claiborne easily.
Completely right. Reid was also a highly rated safety. But he was committed a full year before he even visited. Most other schools usually know they don't have much of a chance trying to take some players from LSU. It's better to prioritize their time on players they actually have a shot at getting.

A lifelong memory was made tonight, and Mathieu will remember his commitment forever. “When I told Coach Miles I wanted to commit it put a big smile on his face. He was happy. But really I was more excited.”

Dont know the story just glad we got him

Scott Van Pelt told Miles he heard he offered him scolly on the spot.
Miles said, " We noticed all the top rated cover guys were trying to line up against the weakest receivers, but TM kept switching places in line to line up against the best."
But no we didn't offer on the spot, that would have been against NCAA rules. You could hear the smile in Miles voice.

The question should be "what's the story behind Matthieu's LACK OF RECRUITMENT by other schools?"

Has Saban been asked by a reporter why he pass on TM7? Would love to know his response for not showing any interest.

Actually, Tennessee did end up offering.
He went to their camp and basically outplayed everyone there. I forget the WRs that were there and he completely shut them down. Marlon Brown, maybe?

From what I heard he was the only DB at one of the camps who could cover Jarvis Landry.

Saban is all about the measurables, and if a kid does not have the critical factors rated for the position he does not offer. Vllahos probably wouldn't have been offered if he hadn't been offered by Shula's staff before Nick was hired. Reason, he is too short for a center,(under 6'1").
Damn.
Saban is STILL winning with Shula's players?

No, actually I'm in Tenn, and love wearing my LSU gear here.
The Mo Meltdown should show that our coaches are better evaluation guys than the services. By seeing the campers up close and against top competition, it allows them a better view. A WR may not have had a top QB, others may have been on a bad team, etc, etc. My bottom line is trust the coaches to select the players that we need.

Burton Burns is my uncle and he recruits this area. Saw him at a wedding after Tyrann committed and he straight up told me that his size was the problem and they felt that he couldn't go up against the likes of Julio Jones etc etc.

That's not true at all.
Mathieu committed in the summer. Tennessee was on him and hoping we'd overlook him, after he balled out at their camp.
Two big studs at that camp: Jarvis Landry and Mathieu. Supposedly, Mathieu was the only one who could cover Landry that day.
