It's being reported that Sumlin has turned down UCLA and ASU. Fedora has turned down Ole Miss and UNC (or told UNC to wait). These guys both have ties to the A&M program though.

My question is - where does Texas A&M rank as a HC job? And please list the schools that are a better job

Pros - Football first mentality fanbase. Large state school (largest in SEC) with good resources. Located in Texas as only SEC school with talent rich Houston 80 miles away. Traditions.

Cons - historic underachiever. Must compete against SECw (could also be a pro). Must recruit against Texas, OU and LSU. Quirkiness/weird to some outsiders. Not in a major city (could also be a pro)

Are you asking in comparison to other openings? Or to all teams?

I think the aggies job is in the top 15. Whomever ends up there has a pretty big task at hand, but they are definitely top 15.

Better jobs than A&M?

As far as getting talent and being able to win easily: (no quality of life situation)
UF
FSU
Miami
USC
LSU
Bama
UGA
Auburn
UTexas
OU
Ohio State
Michigan
Notre Dame

All of these schools are easily able to pull more talent than A&M. (spare me the 250 mile radius and close to Houston BS, because LSU, OU, and UT all dominate TX before A&M does)

The only one I am not 100% sure about is ND and Michigan, but their prestige helps me put them over the top.

Pretty much this.

I know you're afraid to say it, but A&M appears weird, country, and redneck to blacks and that's a hindrance in recruiting at times. Not necessarily a deal breaker, but it does make it tougher to overcome that.

Linkovich, to all teams. I think all agree A&M and UNC are the two best openings with A&M slightly ahead football wise and UNC ahead with the quality of life tag.

Oregon should probably be added because Chip Kelly and Nike are killing it. This sleeping giant is awake.

I like Moustache's list and am on the bubble with UCLA. I put Oregon as a giant woken up but UCLA is a sleeping giant.

Penn State should be on that list but damn, they just killed their program for a while.

true.

So that puts A&M at exactly 15 on my list. Which sounds about right.

They may be as high as 13 depending on how much value you place on Michigan and ND's history.

Or if you include Penn State, then they drop to 16, but right now I'm putting Penn State lower.

Moustache, that list is actually very flattering. You only listed 13 schools clearly in front of A&M.

And A&M isn't redneck or racist like many outsiders think. It's the job of our recruiters to show that to recruits. I know 2 schools very well, A&M and LSU. A&M is far less racist of those two and LSU recruits black athletes very well.

The only racism I ever heard of in College Starion was against middle eastern students. It's rare but it's sad and needs to stop

I think Fedora would be a fool to not take the TAMU job.

I actually have a racism horror story abt A&M, but a few racists shouldn't reflect an entire perception of a university. There are racist folks everywhere.

A&M is Fedoras dream job. Of course he will take it if he's offered the position.

With the way Sherman was fired, head coaches are gonna think twice. A&M has qualities that can make them highly attractive but the management there hasn't made a successful hire in forever when it comes to football and they sure as hell won't get brownie point for how they handle letting people go.

Fedora was born and raised in College Station. His dad is a local barber and his brother is the HS coach in Navasota 20 miles South on Hwy 6.

Sumlin was a coach at A&M in 2001 & 2002.

Charlie Strong was a GA at A&M in 1985 under Jackie Sherrill.

All 3 have privately or publicly stated that A&M was a "dream job". None of them would turn down the job if offered

I think in general it's a top 15 job, but there might be some extenuating circumstances. Usually you need a strong AD in position to make the hire. That way, the incoming coach knows that someone will have his back and will do whatever it takes to make him successful. That was not the case at LSU in 2000. Joe Dean was on his way out the door as AD, so it was our Chancellor, Mark Emmert who took control of the hire. Saban felt assured that it wouldn't matter who the next AD was going to be, because he had the support of someone even higher up.

It sounds like your chancellor is committed to the football program. If so, the next coach will get the facility improvements needed plus the money to put together a top flight coaching staff. If all of this is true, then it could be a plum job.

The obvious better jobs would be: UT, Florida, Bama, USC, Ohio State, FSU, OU, LSU, UGA, Michigan and Nebraska.

Dark clouds hanging over Miami and Penn State. Wisconsin has become a great job. Tennessee has everything except in-state talent.

I'm sure that I've missed some, and of course it's all completely subjective.

The race thing, and the idea of "no one wanting to go to a podunk small town like CS" is completely bogus.

Programs in the state of ALABAMA have won the last 2 NC's. Both are in small podunk college towns just like CS (when compared to somewhere like Austin).

I'm not bashing Alabama for either of those stereotypes, as I don't think they are true for them or for A&M.....but the argument holds 0 relevance.

If every successful program was located in a place like Austin, Miami or LA then I'd take it more seriously.

I added Oregon and ND.

I have A&M at 15. Not bad and it's really where they should be based on potential. They may be 16 like I said earlier depending on Penn State's revival/death.

It's definitely not racist, but it is pretty darn country, which is construed as redneck. (Howdy!, overalls, etc.)

yes, but preconceived notions are hard to get past.

Based on what? This is fricking laughable.
