I can't believe I'd never thought of it until they mentioned it on The Rewatchables.

To be fair to Officer Balzak (also can't believe I never caught that one), he even repeats his question to her to try to clarify the ask - "let me get this straight, you want us to go over to your house just to check on your son" and Kevin's mom is like yep that's it. Uh, no, you're sort of burying the lede there, Kate.

Also, the biggest plot hole in the movie —in addition to the McAllisters not calling their own home to see if Kevin would answer — is the fact that they never called the cops back. Never called the Village PD back to see how the check-in went, how/what the officer reported back, etc.

I haven’t quite either. I’ve always thought what was going through that count’s head is “Well frick it, we need to check some boxes, and if he’s fortunately kidnapped or brutally murdered later, then we at least need to make that effort in order to avoid going to jail. Sure everyone will think we’re the Ramseys before the Ramseys were even a thing, but think of the incredible publicity!”
