Wow, USC won in 2004 while beating just three ranked teams and one of them was in the NC game.

Let's wait and see the final numbers. Ranking at time of game is almost entirely irrelevant.

Actually no, not at all.. they almost always point to ranking at the time of defeat.

I don't know who "they" is and I don't give a shite. It's stupid to act like beating a terrible Florida team who happened to be vastly overrated at the time of the game (due to the stupidity of ranking teams to begin with early in the season) is some historic feat.

Just wait for the end and then see what the number is. That will be more impressive anyway, since it will feature TWO wins over a Top 5 Bama team.

Final rankings are all that matter. I think the '07 team defeated 5 of the final top 15

I posted this the other day from 2000 to present:

I took the opponents ranking (average of end of season AP and Coaches Polls) of great teams since 2000, inversed them (relative to 1-25) and added them up.

For example, Auburn 2010 gets awarded 23 points for beating No. 3 Oregon, and 18 points for No. 8 LSU, etc.

Here are all teams (2000-2010) with more than 50 points:

1 OU 2000 89
2 Auburn 2010 88.5
3 LSU 2007 75.5
4 LSU 2003 74.5
5 Alabama 2009 72
6 Auburn 2004 69.5
7 OSU 2002 67.5
8 OSU 2009 61.5
9 OU 2002 61.5
10 Florida 2006 61
11 Miami 2001 60.5
12 OU 2008 59.5
13 Florida 2008 59.5
14 OU 2007 59
15 Miami 2000 57
16 Texas 2005 56.5
17 Texas 2008 54.5
18 USC 2004 51
19 LSU 2005 50.5

Our 2011 Tigers would get a score of 93 with the following conservative estimate:

No. 3 Alabama (x2)
No. 6 Arkansas
No. 10 Oregon
No. 15 UGA

WVU and Auburn are omitted.

We're really good.

Every team from every year gets the same benefit. It's apples to apples.

However, if it bothers you that much, you can put in the effort to pull the final rankings of all of the teams in the BCS era and find out for yourself.

Interesting. Underscores the idea that it's not necessary to include shitty teams who were over-ranked early in the season.

waiting to the end to see final, also is accurate. had Oregon not played LSU they would be higher, losing to the #1 team drops people (look at arkansas) far but to be honest, they are supposed to lose otherwise they would have been #1. if 3 loses to 1 why should they fall 6 spots, everyone (theoretically) should lose to #1

What benefit is that?

Too late. Somebody smarter than you already did it. Just look up.

No they don't, and no it isn't.

You are interjecting luck as a big arse variable.

i've been pointing this out ever since people have been disparaging lsu '07. same with texas '05.

i just find it interesting that once you get beyond the media hype about the logo on the helmet, usc and texas weren't as impressive as you thought.

I actually agree with this. I think the scoring method that Ghostfaced is using makes this season look just as impressive while being more honest.

Yes. It also goes back to the way conferences and teams are perceived. Is a "stronger" conference one that looks at the strength of it's average team or the one that is the most top heavy? Hell the ACC, minus Duke generally lacks truly terrible teams but also fails to produce any great teams. Also, is a win over Vandy or Duke tell you any more or less about team than a win over New Mexico or Idaho? Look at the top matchups and you will find the truth.

lsu '07 beat 6 teams ranked at the end of the year. a feat only equaled by '98 tenn. in comparison, usc '04 only beat 3 teams ranked at the end of the year.

It's true. USC 03 beat one ranked team (Wazzou No. 9) before Michigan. OU 2003 only beat 1 as well, 11.5 Texas. LSU had 4 wins (over 3 teams).

USC 04 beat No. 9, 10, and 19.5. Even Miami 01, who I don't think anyone will disparage, beat 6 teams but the highest ranked one was 7.5 Nebraska. Others were 14, 15, 18, 19, and 22. That was not their fault that NU snuck in Bama style, but still.

I remember thinking about this a lot in 2003. My suggestion was to treat wins over, say, #'s 60 - 117 as identical when calculating SoS.

It's stupid to say that a team's ranking at the time they played is irrelavant.
