This is my first time ever roasting a turkey and it's coming a part. It's splitting right down the middle and I can see the breast coming apart from the mid bone. Is this normal? What did I do wrong if it's not?

I think you overcooked it.
I heard Alton Brown once say that if this happens, make sure you thin slice the turkey and make a sauce.

Bah... it was a 20 pound turkey. I cooked for about 5 hours at 250 and it started splitting. It is moist as hell though... but it's taste like it's been steamed.

i'm seeing this poor old turkey laying on his backside, looking up and pleading, "please, turn the damn fire off, i've been done for an hour and a half"...

Crap... I was going to cook it to 6 hours. First time... next time I'll know better.
It wasn't that much of a fail... it's all gone!

I just really wanted a crisp skin... just couldn't do it. I'll take the all gone as consolation. I did brine it for 2 damn days.

I've never had a turkey do that, either. Did you dry out the inside of the cavity after you brined it? Maybe that's why it tastes steamed. Also, next time, roast at 350 for 20 minutes a lb. you can crank it up to 500 the first 30 minutes to make the skin crispy and cut the roasting time by 30-45 minutes, or leave it uncovered for the first 30-45 minutes. I usually do the latter.

Better that way than too dry IMO. Could've been worse I guess.

I think this was the case. I took it straight from the brine and put it in the roaster. The extra moisture is probably what did me in... giving it that steam effect. I'll probably cook another turkey(or two) before Christmas because I'm determined to get this right... it irks me when I can't do something.
