Northwestern Game Analysis

Well I don't know whether to be encouraged or discouraged about today's game. On the one hand we played well enough to stay in it to the end. On the other hand, woulda, shoulda , coulda! This should have been a win. We played well in the first half and had the game under control and were even threatening to break it open.
But their coach made a great halftime adjustment and had his guys come out in a 1-3-1 trapping zone defense. To say we didn't handle it well is an understatement. Hickey and Stringer were clueless. They constantly waited too long to pass out of the trap and even worse tried to dribble out of it.
When three guys are converging on one, guess what? Somebody is open. You need quick, sharp, crisp passes to get out of the trap and make them pay. Instead what we got were long soft balloon passes that gave them plenty of time to adjust and trap us again. Or intercept the pass and go the distance which happened several times.
Trent either didn't know what to do, which I doubt, or couldn't get his players to execute. So on the one hand Hickey looked great at times but on the other hand he ultimately lost the game for us by not making good passes.
Another crucial happening, in my opinion, was Storm getting into foul trouble. His turnaround jumper was looking great, 3-3, and he was getting rebounds but his foul trouble limited him to nine minutes. Why Trent didn't put him back in the game in the second half even with four fouls is beyond me.
So suck it up, another loss! Bur still lots of promise if we just work it into the front court guys and only take the three's when they are wide open. And work on and execute the basics - passing, rebounding and defense. The offensive firepower is there to win if we just do the other things well.

And within 6 feet of the arc.

But still lots of promise
Agreed.
And remember that ESPN picked Northwestern to win this tournament. LINK

You beat man to man with a pass. You beat zone with the dribble. There was no gap play by the guards, and Johnson had the wrong players in to attack the 1-3-1.
What was worse was his defensive adjustments, or lack thereof. This team is talented enough offensively to make up for Johnson's deficiencies on that side of the ball, but he's supposed to be a defensive/rebounding guy, and LSU made no positive adjustments defensively.
They kept sinking screens, which you can't do in college basketball, flat out. You have to either get through the screen physically (LSU is not physical on defense) or trail it and get a nice bump from the man guarding the screen. LSU's lack of physicality on defense, and Johnson's inability to put his players in a position to counter the 1-3-1 trap and NW's motion offense principles cost LSU.
I continue to see Johnson make the same coaching mistakes. This team is talented, though, so it might not matter too much.
ETA: Of course, I'm ignoring the obvious that Johnson totally got outcoached in terms of personnel decisions. He had Hamilton on Shurna in the second half. Seriously.

Your boy should have played today actually. He could have given that zone some issues off the bounce. Plus he can guard, unlike Stringer.

pretty much the same thing I saw with this game. very fricking frustrating to watch, especially with all the ticky tack fouls the refs were calling. we couldn't play any defense and gave up over 50 points in the 2nd half
but, regardless, in our first 6 halves of basketball, at least 3 of them were better than anything we had all of last year. that is at least a silver lining to being 1-2

This team is much more talented than anything Johnson's had. It will be a tough task for him to get all the young players playing smarter.

I didn't see the game. Did we try overloading to one side or the other? It's relatively easy to attack a 1-3-1 (I assume trapping at half court?).
You go to a 1-3-1 offense but bring the 3 over to help the 1 get past half court. Use the 5 and 2 to attack the trap.

Hickey & O'Bryant are already the 2 best players on the team. Turner played like arse today but he's still a legit SEC player
if we could have those 3 players plus Ricardo and Malik next year, we will be really legit. Johnson needs to somehow make it to 8-8 to keep job safe, and we are looking at a tournament run next year. frick 2 years behind

yeah we brought the 3 to the top but it was Ludwig half the time who is clueless when he touches the ball. it was basically 5 on 4 with 2 5'10" point guards and ludwig

What time is the game tomorrow?

Good analysis. I hate how we can't attack the the zone the last 2 years, getting annoying. I was happy about our effort today.
White and Stringer make too many dumb passes. Hickey gets a pass as a freshmen, and because of all the other things he did so well in this game.

As bad as we attacked the zone we still put up 82 points. Say what you want, but we shouldn't be losing to anyone when we put up 80 points. NW's Shurna had the game of his life putting up 37. I felt like anything NW put up from behind the arch went in, they just couldn't seem to miss from beyond the arch. I mean our defense allowed plenty of space for those 3's, but they couldn't miss even with a hand in their face. As far as fouls go, we gave up some costly and careless fouls late that led to unnecessary free throw shots. If we can improve our perimeter defense and settle down and work the ball down low offensively we should win many games this season, and possibly contend for the SEC West.

That team we played today will be in the tourney at the end of the year I think

This is their schedule from last year. They went toe to toe with most of the top 25 teams they played. They lost to #1 Ohio State by 1 point and in overtime, which shows they were no slouch team. With their forward and guards shooting like they were today they can easily be a contender for the tournament.

I am certainly more encouraged by this team than last years. I think we might see a lot of these types of games this season b/c of our lack of depth. We will play teams close and then as fatigue and fouls accumulate we will have trouble holding on. Obviously our coach sitting on his hands when NW went to the 1-3-1 didn't help things today.

This is the best part of what you said. This team had several chances late to get the ball back down one possession and could not, because they broke basic defensive fundamentals to attempt to make a selfish play. With 45 seconds on the clock, down 2, do not gamble. Play strong man to man, but off enough to not need help. Do not reach, and we get the ball back most likely with a chance to tie. Instead twice we reached, and gave up two open baskets. Very frustrating to watch. If they can figure it out on that end they will be just fine come SEC time.

Its early , we can rebound , but the undisciplined play we saw last year is still rearing its ugly head, Something is not connecting at practice
