I remember the free kick happening in the NFL back in the late 60's....

If any one on the team could drop kick well, it would be Wing!

Are you saying you can fair catch you're own punt? Then turn around and kick a field goal?
HOLY shite...
Let me explain it to you. There's 10 seconds left in the half/game whatever. Alabama is on their own 3 on 4th down so they decide to punt. LSU fair catches the punt at Bama's 40. LSU can tee the ball up at the spot the ball was caught and attempt a free kick. Bama can't rush at all and has to be 10 yards away. Kicker can get a running start like a kickoff and if he makes it, LSU gets 3 points.
Arizona did this a few years ago with Neil Rackers. It was around 73 yards or so and he missed.

Exactly. It's rare that the situation presents itself, but I've actually seen it happen twice. Scenario is usually a team punting from deep in their own territory and doesn't get off a good punt. If the ball if fair caught, the receiving team has the option to line up and kick an uncontested field goal. Defense has to line up I believe ten yard away and can't cross that point to block it.

Ok. So is it really a free kick? If you miss, you still get the ball and a first down?

It's a change of possession. It's practically a kick-off with standard touch back and return rules applied.

No, it's used on the last play of the half/game.

And they would get a tee.

so i assume if the kick is short the other team can catch it an run it back like with a missed field goal?

No, it's a free kick just like a kickoff is a free kick. If you kick it through the endzone, it's a touchback just like a kickoff is a touchback in that situation.

Belichick let Doug Flutie do it
Actually I think Flutie did it when he was with the Chargers.
