President R. Bowen Loftin Tells His Side of The Story, Pt. 1 of 2

quote:

That’s where I first began to have some degree (of concern) on where the stance of the conference was. In the fall of 2009, we began to hear rumors about UT meeting and talking with the Pac-10. I was actually in Austin in December 2009 meeting with (University of Texas president) Bill Powers. At that point, I had asked everyone but him to leave the room so we could talk privately. I asked him if there was any conversation between him and the Pac-10 and his answer basically was, “I can’t talk about that.” The next month, he was in College Station, and we met in my office. I had the same question, and he gave me the same answer.

Go forward to the April (2010) timeframe…I got a call from (Pac-10 commissioner) Larry Scott indicating he wanted to come see me. Scott shows up here, and we have a meeting. Basically they had been working for months, and he had schedules of not just football but, basketball, soccer and baseball, and they had been working hard on this thing. He did a presentation for us on here’s how we are going to do this. I obviously began discussing this privately with the Board of Regents, and the basic direction I got from them was, “Look, we’ll probably get an offer from the Pac-10 to go join them along with five other schools in the Big 12.” The chairman of the board said to me, “One option is no option. You better figure out what things A&M could do besides follow Texas and other schools to the Pac-10.”

quote:

After I had this conversation with the board, I made a phone call to (SEC commissioner) Mike Slive and said, “Mike we need to talk.” Ultimately, he came here to see me, and we had a discussion about the SEC as a possible home for Texas A&M.

Spoke to Dr. Loftin for about 15 minutes at the Idaho game in a box at Kyle, True Gentleman is the only way I know to describe the man to those who have not met him.

that's a good article.

The fact that UT was willing to run off to the Pac-10 and leave the Big 12 "have-nots" holding their junk has to be enough reason for Mizzou to jump ship.

the fake indignation that UT sends our way for leaving the Big Mess er, XII is so put on. They're not mad because we left, they're mad becauese we left first successfully.

To this end, I fully expect them to be in the SEC within the next 10 to 15 years. They will have to change much of their self worth stance, but I think it will happen.

And I would expect hell to freeze over before either happens.

You just know that Boren was sitting with a full house expecting to win the pot, but then the PAC dropped a royal flush on him.

facepalmed.

One salient fact that you've overlooked.
The administration at Mizzou has been playing the part of a whore on the expansion issue the last few years. They obviously don't like the role; they'd rather be with their one true love (Big 10) but they've been rebuffed for a prettier girl (Nebraska). Now, they're trying to screw around with the SEC to make their "soul mate" jealous. If the Big 10 doesn't react to this perceived act of betrayal, Mizzou may even break down and marry the SEC in spite. We all know how these marriages end.

good point...but, things change. None of us truly know how badly Mizzou wants the Big 10 relative to the SEC today. Last summer, A&M was clearly divided on Big 12 vs SEC. Now, we are almost 100% united.

Is the same now true for Mizzou on the SEC? I have no idea.

Which is one reason why I'm not sure Mizzou will happen. We'll see soon enough, I guess.

Very high quality post and thread by the Aggs. You guys aren't so bad after all. Welcome to the SEC.

You might want to post this on the SEC rant.

I don't think the SEC accepts a 14th application this year. It'll be in the spring IMO. No need to rush. The SEC is playing with 13 in 2012 regardless. Juat stay in contact with all the schools in consideration and at the end of the day take the best option.

It hasn't been put on the Rant but if there is a thread that fits this board perfectly it is this one.

Interesting read, Smoke. I could get on board with getting this over now and not dragging out for a year

RT @davebriggscdt: Missouri AD Mike Alden just arrived at curators meeting at UMKC. Curators to go into closed session in minutes.

There is a 2nd closed door meeting scheduled for tomorrow. I think we'll have our answer by late tomorrow. By answer, I mean I think that the letter proclaiming Mizzou's intent to leave the Big 12 contingent on being able to find a new conference home comes out tomorrow.
