What is the real secret to LSU's improvement in coaching in 2011?

I'll wager there are several reasons!
To get to the truth, we may have to watch them during the game
1. Kragsthorpe: The biggest reason for offensive improvement. His illness and resulting use of Stud as OC and playcaller has worked.
2. Chavis: Amazing year that few expected. I knew this year's dee would be better than a 2010 version but this dee is off the charts
... Leading up to the point of this thread
3. WHERE THE HELL ARE STUD & CHAVIS DURING GAMES?:
We knew Krags would be in the pressbox ...
But Stud and Chavis are up in the pressbox too ... Since when does LSU do this? NEVER!!!
What the hell is going on up there, what are they cooking up in that pressbox, and is this why are we starting to blow teams out and play like we are making outstanding game-time adjustments
Edit ... add ... And can they do this "on the road" without fear of opponents "stealing plays"

Dropping Crowton is the bigger deal than the hiring of Krags/promoting Studs

It's real easy. They let Lee be the Quarterback. When your QB can manage a game you will win.

Keeping things simple. Out talent the competition, refs keep flags in pockets.
"I run 4 plays, split veer. It's like novocaine. Just give it time, it always works."
- Coach Boone
Last year garunteed about 2-3 illegal substitution calls, too many men in the huddle, offsides, or illegal motion penalties every single drive.
"Let's get 5 wide, send three people in motion, then one more in motion, sub out two recievers, and run a dive play." - Gary Crowton

Pro style smash mouth, play action football. Thats what we're built for. Stop us if you can.

IMo, the biggest difference for the offense this year is consistency of execution. This could be due to several things. For starters the new OC may do a better job of recognizing plays that the offense has a higher chance to succeed with. Another could be that practices are now more focused on knowing a few plays perfectly vs learning a few plays adaquately. Finally, the planets have aligned causing receivers to get open more and CATCH the football.

Talent! In addition, Chavois' defense and consistent play at Quarterback.

Simplifying the offense, so Krags influence. You can add Lee's development in there, as well.
On Defense, its the HoneyBadger, he changes everything. May even have created a whole new defense, or at least the strength of it.

Keeping it simple is the key. the key this year is the reduction in 3rd and longs . makes the game a lot easier when you get positive yards on first down.

I think it's a combination of losing Crowton and Coach Stud and Kragthorpe. I've always said Crowton was holding the LSU program back with his mass substitutions, crazy formations, and bizarre playcalling. Stud was very unpopular here in 2009 because of Oline performance, but I think after the improvement in Oline play in 2010 and the playcalling this year, I think he is a major part of the offensive success. Remember, Stud coached under Urban Meyer at Bowling Green and had several great seasons after Meyer left. In fact, I think Meyer wanted to take him to Utah, but Stud wanted the OC job.
Also Kragthorpe is an established QB coach. He may not have done well at Louisville, but he revived Tulsa and he was QB coach in the NFL, in fact I think he coached Drew Bledsoe during his most productive season in the NFL. Point is, LSU went from the Crowton offense - to this years' offense because of qualified, experienced coaches.

Simplifying the offense
Offense doesn't go 3 and out like it used to. It may not score on every drive, but it's picking up a couple first downs, pinning the other team deep and allowing the D to stay fresh and active.

In the national championship years having an offense headed by a quarterback that just managed the game has been a huge difference. Mauck and Flynn had their WOW moments, but mainly they were asked and coached to manage the offense and be efficient. Lee this year is basically doing the same thing. Donkt turn it over and put the defense in a bad spot. Having Krags and Stud coach them like this has been the key development in the offense this year.

Experience. Miles is entering only his 11th year as a headcoach and learning more each year. Krag has come in and settled the qb's, and chavis has great atheletes to work with. Frank Wilson will be a headcoach in a few years.

Easy answer...Miles sold his soul to the devil!
Kidding
Seriously though, in order of importance
1. Simplifying the offense
2. Competent QB play
IMO

I thought Chavis had always coached from the pressbox? And I'm pretty sure Crowton did his coaching from there too, which isn't too uncommon for OC's to do.

I know for a fact Crowton was in the box. Can't remember about Chavis though.
