I've got a Bradley and love it. For smaller smokes its perfect. The electrics really beat tending a fire all day.

i have the Brinkmann - works great, just cannot really regulate the temp. I installed a temp gauge in the lid to help figure it out. Plug it in and feed a few chunks every hour or so.

I have the cajun injector one. It has the digital temp control so you can set the temp to exactly what you want. Also has a chute on the side to add the wood so you don't have to open the door. works great for brisket, chicken and ribs. Have not smoked anything else in it. Got a really good deal on it when it was on sale at Acadamy a few years ago.
If you go electric I would recommend getting one with the digital temp control. The ones you simply plug in and turn the dial to low/med/high has no real way to control the temp, you are at the mercy of the heating element.

What I use and think it is great.
Only negatives: Pain to clean it, Chip container too small.

This is great news, tending to a fire al day was what I was worried about. But I didn't want to substitute the true smoked flavor.

I have the same Cajun Injector. Works very well. I've heard that the computer timer/temp control can go out especially if you get it wet. Keep it covered. I've had mine just over a year with no problems. Got it at Academy for $130 or so. Looks alot like a Dorm Fridge.

i just typed this up on a friend's fb page asking about electric smokers. lot's of hard core anti-electric replies (kinda surprised none here yet), but here's what i told her:
lot of good advice here. bottom line is why are you buying it? if you are askign about an electric smoker, i'm guessing this is your first foray into smoking.
a brinkman electric smoker is an easy way to get into it at a good price point, and then if you find you really like it you can buy a more expensive electric or pellet smoker. or, if you find you've really gotten the bug, you can get a real wood smoker. at that point it will again depend on what you want to do, but most likely a weber smokey mountain or big green egg will be the way to go.
my first smoker was a charcoal brinkman cajun cooker bullet smoker, and even though i keep pouring kosher salt and water into the base i can't get the damn thing to rust out so i can buy the weber.
for a price point of 70 or 80 bucks for the electric, you can do a decent smoke (imho, as with others above, not as good as a charcoal smoke, although as you can also see above that's open for debate) and see if you like it. my dad had one and did smoked turkeys and they were good. that's where i would start if you don't want to get into the time involved for a charcoal smoker.

I have a big pit traditional pit too, but for something small like a butt or two, some whole chickens, sausages, small briskets, and such the electrics are great. The biggest limitation is their size and capacity. Some models also use a heating element and have problems distributing the heat evenly. Typically the top of the vertical smokers is much cooler than the bottom and you have to account for this in your smoking times.
I find myself using the electrics for smoking meats overnight. Just set it and forget it outside of waking occasionally to baste the meats.

+1. ITs great to put a brisket in at night, go to bed and have it ready for lunch the next day without you having to tend a fire all night.

I had the Cajun Injector one and it worked great but only worked for a little over 1yr. That being said I probably used it almost every weekend and sometimes a twice a weekend and some during the week. Definitely got my money out of it but the element went out.
I am thinking of upgrading to a smokin-it which is one of the better brands but not quite as exspensive as other models.
I still like using charcoal and wood but for convenience and fool proof smoking electric is the shite.

My neighbor has one and it does a good job. The only issue he has is it tends to trip his breaker. When he does overnight smokes, he adds a small lamp to the same outlet so that he can tell if the breaker trips from inside his house.
