Panthers fan here...

I come in peace. Well... sort of. I like to visit other team's forums and discuss the game; haven't been here before, but Google is my friend.

I've watched a bit of you guys this season and I am impressed as expected. Drew Brees is doing his thing and Mark Ingram looks to be a beast in the making. Looks like Deuce McCallister back out there. I fully expect he'll have a huge day against our sorry run defense. We're starting 2 rookie DT's and have lost two of our starting linebackers for the season, so it's probably going to be a tough road defensively for us.

I expect you guys will take this one, but we gave the Packers a run for their money an probably should have beaten the Bears had our special teams not imploded. I hope we keep the ball away from Sproles Sunday.

But if we do have a shot, it's on offense. I don't know how it's happened, but our piss poor, worst in the league passing game from last season has very quickly emerged as one of the most explosive offenses in the NFL. We added Shockey and traded for Greg Olsen and Steve Smith has been re-born with Cam Newton throwing the ball.

Anyway, I figured some of you might be interested in an in-depth look at Cam's performance thus far this year. Below I have posted YouTube videos containing every pass Cam has thrown this season with the exception of the Jaguars game, which I can't seem to find online.

Cam @ Arizona - 24/37, 422 yards, 2 TD's, 1 INT + 8 rush, 18 yards, TD
LINK

Cam vs. Green Bay - 28/46, 432 yards, 1 TD, 3 INT's + 10 rush, 53 yards, TD
LINK

Cam @ Chicago - 27/46, 374 yards, 1 TD, 1 INT + 8 rush, 35 yards, 2 TD's
LINK

Should give you a better idea of how he's looked so far. That said, I still think you guys take this one. I feel good about the future of the Panthers, but we're not there just yet.

Hopefully the NFC South comes down to Saints/Panthers starting next year. I really think the Bucs and Falcons are overrated - particularly the Falcons.

Love that you have a sig of Cam. 4 games, 5 INT's. Good luck with that.

That's what happens when you pass too much without a good QB...lots of yards, lots of INT's, and lots of losses.

Welcome, great post. I haven't had a chance to watch too many Panthers games, so I'm glad you posted those videos of Newton throwing the ball. I'm gonna check them out.

Not saying that I'm completely sold on Cam or anything, but this is a horrible argument.

He's been good so far, man. Love him or hate him, give him his due.

no gimmes in the NFL. Upsets abound as Saints fans know from Browns & Cardinals last year. Rivera certainly has seemed to inject some new life there.

From the Saints side-

Panthers may fire it up offensively but Drew & Co. can outduel anyone.

I truly think this is the best D you guys have faced yet. Not elite but still gelling. Most susceptible spot is TE pass coverage.

Thanks for Kasay as a fill in. P Morstead is All Pro. Our kick coverage has gone from weak link to one of the best.

My Panthers take (your thoughts?)-

They might be even more dangerous offensively if they ran more. This could go from might to must as the season progresses. One dimensional play creates defensive opportunities.

What will keep this game from really being close is Beason & Davis out. That with a soft middle DL might see the Saints running game push for big numbers. Crowd the box and ya know Brees will make ya pay.

A plus with Gamble back. Munnerlyn has looked good. Key vs. Saints is DB depth (similar to GB). Can ya cover an empty backfield with 5 legit targets downfield?

Sproles leads the NFL in all purpose yards. If they kick to him they deserve what they get.

Thanks for the vids...I've really not seen much of Cam this year and I'm glad I finally get to. Hope he eats turf on Sunday, though.

Nice post

I've watched cam throw enough in the sec. Thanks though.

Div. games are never a gimmie and this one on the road is always tough.

If you guys abandon the run that will make it all the easier. Stewart and Orangelo have given us fits in the past.

As Blu said lets see your depth in the secondary when we go five wide!

I will be honest and say I thought cam would be a bust in the NFL. He's proved he might just have a home.

Our defense covering their tight ends has always been my biggest concern about this game. That and Cam scrambling into the open field - our tackling has been suspect and he's fricking huge/fast.

That being said, even if the Panthers have a good day on offense, they will have to have an extraordinary day on defense to win. It's entirely possibly because it's the NFL and it's a road division game against a feisty, competitive opponent, but I like our chances.

Sadly, I think most of Cam's efforts are gonna be for not as long as you have that putrid defense.

I did see a bit of the Chicago game. Cam throws into coverage alot...especially when he is under pressure. Most young QBs do. I just hope the Saints can capitalize. He missed a couple of throws too. The pick 6 came off of the WRs hands, but the throw was high also. Steve Smith shouldn't be running so wide open Sunday, as he was for the long pass that Cam ran in later for a TD. He makes quick decisions, mostly, and has the ball out fast. Thats key. He can run and is a hard sack...thats going to be trouble for the Saints, as well as, most teams. The poster that said you need to run the ball is right. You have Williams and Stewart. Cam's life would be a whole lot easier if you used those two guys.

Explain yourself.

My "argument" is that they throw the ball too much (especially with the talented backfield they have), which results in tons of yards (praise be to Cam??), tons of INT's, and tons of losses.

He's talented, no doubt. But how am I wrong?

I think he has fared much better than other rookies would have passing that much.

Maybe. 1/1 TD to INT ratio is exactly what I would expect from a rookie QB in an offense that passes too much.

Cam's looked really good for a rook through 4 games. I'm not sure Bradford had as good of numbers as Cam does. If they got their running game going to protect him a little, obviously his numbers would go down but you'd probably see a better passer rating.

Like I said, his passing game has looked like what you would expect from a rookie QB drafted at the top of his class. Especially on a team that has thrown him into the fire. One of his "great performances" was a 1 TD, 3 INT game against GB. Y'all should really stop watching ESPN.

What separates him from the others is his ability to run the ball. There. I said it.

In Bradford's defense he does not have guys like Steve Smith, Brandon Lafell or Greg Olsen...

That helps

Nobody's expecting him to have an Aaron Rodgers-esque 6 TD game, dude. He's a rookie. And a rookie that everyone doubted. He's made a few poor decisions and a few bad throws that went for INTs, but for a rookie he's looking good. Yes, his ability to run the ball does separate him and gives him a serious edge, but he's doing a good job of not just tucking and running at the sign of pressure. He sits in the pocket, shows great pocket presence, and even when he starts running he's constantly looking downfield for a big throw. He's not pulling a Mike Vick and just using his legs. He uses his legs to scramble to give receivers time to get open, and uses his legs to get first downs. I expected him to come in and do a lot of running, but he's shown that he can hang in the pocket and take a lick to make the throws. A few years and he's going to be a legit QB.
