Does anyone see any similarities between this years team and the teams that won the MNC in '03 and '07? (besides the obvious venue of the MNC game, that's been done to death)
I'll start it off with this.

With the '07 team, we lose Jamarcus Russel to the draft, and the next year, Matt Flynn steps in and ... Another MNC.

This year we lose JJ before the season and things look bad with the schedule we open with. JL steps up his game and....well...let's see what happens.

With the '03 team, we lose Rohan Davey, but when all hope seems lost, Matt Mauck steps it up big time in the SEC CG and the MNC game.

that was 2001 when Mauck came in for the injured Davey

I was there with all the bitchy Tennessee fans carrying their roses like we'd be an easy victory.

He jumped the route in the SECCG, and we should be forever grateful, but it is a huge exageration to say that Zenon was a badass corner. Good Lord.

I aint about to say it.....mainly, because I think it has no bearing, as JJ would have looked just as good......

I think at least.

Here are the real ones though.....

1. Non spectacular qb that was essentially starting one year.

2. Really good at running the ball.

3. Great receivers that answered the call when dialed.

4. Defense that could absolutely change a game.

So you missed a fact. No big. Your topic is excellent. I must disagree with TigerTrey, whose four were pretty good. But I think our receivers still need to prove themselves the equals of Early Doucet and D. Byrd and Dickson. Beckham looks extremely promising. And if Shepard can turn the corner, he could be another Doucet, who not only could catch, but could do wonders with the ball after the catch. Remember Doucet's TD when he dodged two Ohio State backs including Malcolm Jenkins (one of my favorite Saints). That TD iced the game; I knew with 100% certainty we were going to win after that. Our defense was just too good for Ohio State to think about coming back.

Don't fall prey to the (race) bait. We would still be 4 - 0 no matter how long the QB sets the tanning bed timer.

1. I am thrilled that JL is getting to enjoy his success in his last year.

2. When the railroad job that JJ is currently working (or actually, that job that is working on him) comes to an end, I'll will welcome him back, and expect his help. I think:

a. we'll need it
b. he'll deliver it

To some degree you are right, and I am wrong. The curren receiving corp does not measure up to Doucet (03) or Clayton (07).

But the fact of the matter is we've not had to dail their number yet in the clutch.

All I'm saying is that when we do (and we will if we are to win the NC), they will answer.

Other than the lights out defense, no...not really.

Rohan's last year was 2001. 2002 was Mauck/Randall and even Clausen. A complete season separated Ro and the 2003 NC team...and anyone who suggests that we'd have been WORSE off with a passer and leader like Ro under center in 2003 is high as frick.

As much fun as 2007 was, it had absolutely nothing to do with the change in QB. LSU's 2 losses in 2006 were to higher ranked teams on the road, whereas the 2 losses in 2007 were to lesser ranked teams with one being at home. The 2007 team benefited from a weaker SECW that enabled them to get to Atlanta with 2 losses where the 2006 team could not. And of course, the 2007 team benefited from WVU dropping the Big East Championship game to PITT allowing LSU to vault from #7 to #2. while Flynn played solid ball all year, there is nothing that he did that can be attributed to pushing LSU over the hump from the previous year and into the NCG.

Jarrett Lee and Matt Flynn are both geminis. Both were 5th year seniors. Both had to wait their turn from two quarterbacks who were finished after their junior year of football. Both jefferson and Russell had two losses in a year where they could have won it all. Both Flynn and lee will have won championships in new orleans. Lee will get drafted by the cardinals in the 5th round of this year's draft. Lee will end up starting for an NFL team suprisingly before Flynn will.

You're absolutely right! I'm getting old and my years are getting mixed up I guess.
