Kind of interesting that the Big 10 is so quiet

Former Big East commissioner Mike Tranghese is one of the nation's most respected voices on college sports. He's also extremely sharp and not afraid to speak his mind.
Tranghese sounded off Monday with WFAN Radio in New York. He lit into the ACC for poaching the Big East again, and he also ripped college presidents for being greedy and disloyal as realignment fever hits again.
The entire interview definitely is worth a listen, but Tranghese had some very interesting thoughts about the Big Ten and its position when the realignment dust settles.
I think you'll like what he says.
"You know who's going to be the winner in all this when it's all is said and done if you want to talk about conference? Big Ten. The Big Ten is sitting there, they took Nebraska, they're on the sidelines, they're watching all this chaos, everybody's going to be taking people. And you know you could be standing there all alone at the end? Notre Dame and Texas. And the Big Ten would not be accused of raiding because they're just going to be sitting there."

Texas will never get everything they want. So regardless of where they land, a huge ego check will have occurred.
Also, ND will br stupid if they don't join a football conference if all this is headed toward the playoff direction.

I agree....I think ND goes Big 10 or ACC and Texas follows.

If everything goes down like it appears it will (Super Conferences), there's NO way ND can still stay independent. I'd imagine they'll end up in the ACC (where they should go) but because of history with the Big10, will land there. UT, who the hell knows...I seem to hear a different story every day.

As long as ND can find a home for their smaller sports, they will remain independent.
There is no need for them to be tied to a conference in football.

I think the average fan will not like a move to either the B1G or ACC, especially if you can't keep the OU game. I think the PAC option, while not great, is the best for the fans (assuming SEC would never ever be considered).

I don't think we are going to the four 16-team mega-conferences in this round of expansion. I think that is several years down the road. I wouldn't be surprised if the ACC and Pac went to 16, but I think the SEC will stay at 13 for now and the Big 10 will stay at 12. Notre Dame is safe as an independant for now. They will have to make a move in the next 5 years.
ACC may not accept Rutgers and Uconn, to save a slot for Notre Dame down the road. I could see UConn going to the ACC and Rutgers to the Big 10. That would leave both conferences with openings for the next round.

If Big East folds under realignment, can you really see another conference accepting all ND sports EXCEPT football?

If it moves to four super conferences you can bet a four team play off will happen. Notre Dame will be out if they remain independent.

The Big East was founded as a basketball conference. It's not going anywhere. The remaining basketball schools will likely add Xavier, Butler, St. Joseph, Temple, Memphis, etc., and be just as good (or better) than before. Notre Dame will always have a home for their non-football schools.

quote:If the cards fall properly and these 64 teams decide to distance themselves from the NCAA to create an 8 team playoff, who's to say they can't divide the Div I schools into the haves and have nots? This is a money driven idea, an the money making schools will drive it.

quote:But the Big East being a basketball conference means that ND will have a new home in this new landscape if they want to remain relevant. Unless there is a merger between BE/B12
Notre Dame will always have a home for their non-football schools.

quote:This isn't directed at me, but once again the answer is money. What other purpose is there for super conferences? Bigger conference = prestigious tv deals. Prestigious tv deals = premium advertisements. More games(playoff) will fuels the monster.
why do you think we are any closer to a playoff system with four super conferences?

Because the power will be centralized too four entities and they will do whatever makes the most sense for them. In this case make a four team play off and shut everyone else out including the NCAA.

FYI, the four 16-team conference/playoff idea is mainly being talked about by fans/media. I haven't heard a conference commissioner or other credible conference rep discussing it.

What should happen is that the Catholic non-football schools form a conference with ND for all other sports and ND stays independent in FB.
Or ND forms an association with the Big Ten and MAC. It becomes a hockey only member with the big ten and receives a small share of BTN money and joins the MAC for all other sports includng men's hoops and reaches some deal with the big ten to continue the Michigan, Michigan State and Purdue rivalries and add 2 big ten teams per year in a rotation to it schedule to give the big ten 2-3 ND games per year to help it in tv contracts.
