Could there ever be an "Ivy League" type conference in the south? What schools?

I've always wondered why schools like Tulane, Rice and Vandy didn't form their own Ivy League type conference without scholorships just based on academic considerations.

I know Vandy wouldn't be likely to forego SEC money but would there be a group of schools that this would work for? If so, what teams would fit into such a scenario?

The reason I think a team like Vandy wouldn't prefer this is the same point a lot of pointy headed elitist nerds/academicians misunderstand in their bashing of the football culture at some schools. Believe it or not, Vandy's historically bad football program greatly enhances their brand by being in an extremely high profile conference like the SEC. Vandy would still be a fantastic school in an off league of other tiny schools but their brand wouldn't have anywhere near the reach they have without being a member of a major BCS conference.

eh, not sure about that. The lack of big name football certainly hasn't hurt the reach of similar schools like Georgetown, Emory, and Rice

Great link. Who knows if re-alingment leaves some of these schools out in the cold, maybe they'll re-visit it.

Emory benefits from being in the heart of Atlanta which is pretty much an international city. In most other areas, Emory would just be a very good regional school. Georgetown has a VERY high profile basketball program in an amazing basketball BCS league. Rice is a very small school with a relatively large athletic department that is high profile enough in football and baseball. My point is that I still think both Georgetown and Rice have higher national profiles from more prominent league associations than Emory.

The scac likes to think of themselves as such but its d3. Sewanee and centre used to be powerhouses though. But that was 100 years ago.

Vandy is a founding member of the SEC. We aren't going anywhere. As of right now we are more than competitive in baseball and basketball and are getting there in football. But just for argument's sake, if I were forming a southern equivalent of the Ivy League, I would go with:
FOOTBALL
Vandy
Tulane
SMU
Rice
Duke
Richmond (convince them to upgrade their football team which incidentally has defeated Duke and Vandy in the last three years)
Wofford (do the same as Richmond)
Furman (see above)
Wake Forest
Miami (after NCAA sanctions reduce their football program to a shadow of its former self)
BASKETBALL
