If an ACC team were to bolt, how long would they get to pay off the exit fee?

And would you expect the SEC to help them pay the exit fee, or would they be on the hook for the money themselves?

according to this article yes the sec might help pay it.
and they would have to pay it pretty quick. But 20 mil is not that big. Hell last year A&M voted to raise the buyout for the Big 12 to 30 mil and if the big 12 survives then they are prolly only gonna have to pay 15mil.

Depends on how the inclusion of the two new teams (Syracuse and Pitt) affects the contract agreement that has been made.
Also, I seriously doubt a contract amendment has been signed to allow the increased buyout since that will likely require several schools to get BOS approval.
So if it is done soon, the team may be able to get out with the lower buyout.

it has been speculated that the ACC poison bill exit fee can't be binding until the school Boards/Regents approve because the President would have the authority to incur a $20million liability/lien against the school, which is technically what they did.
Clemson folks are speculating that FSU is the one pushing back hard on UCONN & Rutgers because they realize that the ACC is skewing to the NE and to basketball. Although FSU alone doesn't have the power to block a school, there threat to leave could work as a veto because they need FSU for football. THis also supports FSU recently announcing an expansion commtittee which was probably timed when the conversations began w/ the BE schools.
the $20m could easily be absorbed into the new contract the SEC would hope to get. you also have to realize that tv contracts can be renegotiated for contraction as well as expansion. therefore, the ACC will lose FSU from their market if they jumped. FSU wanted to package themselves w/ Clemson but may now be looking at it alone. The Clemson administration is in love w/ the ACC academics but the fans probably want the SEC.

I think it would depend on who and how much a new TV deal would be worth...

I agree to an extent. Some might be poached, but just remember the team has to want to leave their conference. If they don't, then we won't go looking for them. I think most ACC teams are happy in the ACC. 1 or 2 might bounce, but I don't see this conference having any kind of major shakeup.

if i'm FSU, there's no way I go to the SEC to compete with the hardest conference in college football

same for VT, daU, and Clemson. they all have factors besides just the buyout that makes it unlikely for them to leave the ACC
so if those are out, what ACC teams would the sec want? NC State? how is that better than WVU. more importantly how is that better than WVU and 20m still in your pocket?

Assuming FSU is being targeted by the SEC, they'd also need to get the approval of the schools within the SEC and my guess is UF and UGA won't be necessarily willing to not voting against their introduction, largely for recruiting purposes.
That said, why is everyone forgetting USF? I know it's not a great program, but their student body is huge at nearly 50,000, and they have a very good academic reputation. They have a top 25 football program and could be a beast in other sports in the SEC.
With the Big East dying as it seems, they'd be a very good pick up.

I don't think it would be a bad choice
but the SEC already has tampa viewership

You do if it means more money. The money is in football tv contracts. The ACC expansion isnt really helping that.

still on that zero chance train lol? just curious

I do agree somewhat with that BUT 2 things:
1. 20 mill can go down
2. whos to say you cant have both WVU + ACC... an ACC school would be first targets if you are going to go to 16 IMO

If I'm the SEC and the choice is simply WV for free or VT/FSU at a cost of $20 million I think long term the cost/benefit still comes in favor of those 2.

Would come down to tv money I guess?
Can an SEC with A&M and FSU get a new deal worth more than whatever ACC can right?

You do know (at least in the SEC) Bowl revenues are distributed evenly? Also its not like in the SEC where there are 2 BCS teams regurally meaning 1.5 BCS bowl dollars (I think I remember if a conference has 2 teams they only get half a payout or something less than full on the second) to go around. TV revenues in the ACC will be less. The only advantage for being the top dog in the ACC is merchandise sales. Do you think that merchandise for being the top dog in the ACC outweighs shared TV and bowl revenue in the SEC?

You realize making a BCS game for most conferences only gives you 2 shares of the money, right?
So in the ACC right now, you break $17 million into 14 shares, 1 to each team, 1 to league office and then 1 extra to the team participating, so it's like $1.2 million if they are the first team in the game.
They don't get that much more.

Isn't his point though that SEC gets that 2nd BCS team much more often than ACC?(yes that could change)
