it would, in practice, be an 8-16 team playoff depending on conference structure

but it could happen

I think so...

Each conference has a championship (8 teams), which leads perfectly into the 'BCS + 1' scenario that has been talked about ad nauseam for the last few years.

8-4-2-championship

I think the best way would be to take the two best teams from each conference and have an 8-team playoff.

well what would happen would be that each conference has a championship game and their winner plays in the 4 team playoff, so it would essentially be an 8 team playoff

if some conferences take the 4 division format, it could possibly become a 16 team playoff.

Man, I'm getting chills just thinking of how fun that would be.

IMO it's still a few years off. The four conf (and they will probably be 18-20 teams each ultimately) have to separate themselves from the rest of the FBS first. They will do this by either creating a new division within the NCAA or break away entirely.

IMO it should only be a 4 team playoff. What happens when Alabama has already clinched a playoff birth so they decide to rest their starters in the Iron Bowl? Do you really want to see that in college football?

Well conference championship games are playoffs too, so it's either an 8 or 16 team playoff depending on whether conf are broken into 2, 3, or 4 div.

The greatest strength of the BCS is also the source of the greatest frustration for many. In the BCS every game counts and every team you play has the ability to affect your chances even if they lose (e.g. say we beat NWLa 11-10 on the last play of the game). To retain the importance of the reg season, they need to adopt policies that capture as much of this as practical. For example, I think they should go to a simple point standings so that you can make every game count. E.g conf games 2 pts and OOC 1 pt. You could also give a Div game 3, x-conf 2 and OOC 1. I'm sure there are other creative things that could be done.

This is true. If the power conferences tried that 4-team playoff, Boise and others would have an anti-trust suit ready before the ink dries on the contract. They hypothetically have a shot at a NC now, but shutting them out completely would be undeniably "anti-competitive".

i dunno, but it's possible they cut off their nose to spite their face if they go this route

if they really are going to threaten this, then the NCAA will create a new division, which will frick the Boise States

We should. PAC-16 and Big-16 champs in the Rose Bowl, SEC and ACC in the Orange. Conference CGs become quarterfinals in an 8-team playoff.
