OK. Lets say I was going to get an AR-15. There are tons of manufacturers out there.

There are lots of different makes and models out there.

There are Piston vs direct impingement.

16 inch barrel or 20 inch barrel.

Tons of choices. I have heard good things about RRA, DD, and LWRC. I have had people tell me that pistons are the new best thing and others say piston still has issues and isn't ready for prime time.

So, for 2000 or less, who makes the best bang for the buck and who makes the best?

I know there are tons of AR owners out there. And even if you don't own one, you likely have an opinion. So, lets hear it.

Colt. Overpriced, but you get what you pay for.

I'd get a 16" shorty. But its all preference. If you want best bag for buck, get Bushmaster. I dont think Colt has the chromw lined barrels anymore but I could be wrong. You can get a good Bushmaster for 7-800. Also check out Rock River Arms.

With that kind of budget I would also look at LaRue Tactical.

DI: Colt, Noveske, Larue, GAP, JP rifles, BCM, DD, KAC, Barrett

Piston: POF, LWRC

There are others, especially the piston guns.

For barrel length, 20 if you are regularly going to shoot to 600. If not, then 16 or 14.5.

Piston guns arent my thing, the POF and LWRC are very nice guns. I would never ever ever buy one of those conversion kits.

Piston: POF

DI: KAC SR15

Id probably do the DI gun, and I really like the setup of the Knights lower. Its all ambi controls, I am left handed and have adapted to right hand ARs, but ambi controls are so much faster. Those would probably be the 2 factory complete guns I would buy, or an ACR.

My current gun has a upper that is almost exactly like this one... BCM

The KAC I might be able to get for 1766.

The POF for 1700. But I would have to wait for this one. The KAC would ship quickly.

Check these out:

LINK

I know the owners of this company personally. They build a fine weapon.

If you want a custom setup, contact them and they will build you anything you want.

I have seen some pretty badass customs in their shop.

FWIW, I just build my ARs now, but if I had to buy a factory gun those have the features that I have found to work for me. They both have things I could live with, but wouldnt put on a gun I build.

I am no expert, so to be safe I pay attention to specs and material and recently settled on buying from DPMS.

I think that KA makes one of the best. I personally bought RRA for budget reasons which is my first and only. I chose RRA over Bushy for the warranty primarily. DPMS wasn't considered

You say this because you have handled rifles from all three companies?
