Why Does Texas Not Want TCU in the Big 12?

Is this true and if so can some Texas guys explain this stance to me? It would seem that TCU would be a great fit for UTa and the conference. TCU is a respected academic institution, it is within a great market in the DFW metroplex, it is a Texas school, it has been successful in football, and there will be a very nice brand new stadium on campus.

What's not to want?

My understanding is that Texas doesn't want any former SWC members because all those schools were capable of competing on the same level as Texas when they could get top-tier talent.

TCU is winning right now with castoffs from other schools and playing in a lesser conference. Putting them in the Big 12 and giving them a ton of games in Texas will elevate them and give them a much better shot of pulling down some of the state's 4 star and 5 star recruits.

As said above, they're too good with too much potential, and they don't have that big of a following. They also don't bring in any new markets. Basically inviting a school that could beat you on the field but wouldn't bring anything new to the conference off it.

I'm sure this is a stupid question but, if we want to expand the television appeal for the SEC = $$$$ then why not go into the Dallas market by adding aTm & TCU?

This is all about $. $ in college football comes from TV revenue. UofH, SMU and TCU don't bring any new markets to the table. I know you guys like to giggle to yourselves that Texas is afraid to play every former SWC school but this is all about money.

Even in DFW, nobody watches TCU, so... who cares?

Texas doesn't want TCU in the Big 12 because then they will lose recruits to the Horned Frogs. TCU at the end of the day still plays in the Mountain West (eventually the Big East).

You're absolutely correct. It's all about the money, and the fact that Texas is afraid of TCU.

Yep! TCU to the Big 12 can add about 6 additional viewers to the conference and give UT another loss. Texas will not have that!

ESPN made sure that the only two games they had a shot at with the Frogs (Baylor and BYU, becuase they aren't at home and our TV contract is shite) were on ESPN in primetime. It's not like they put us up ahead of LSU-Oregon, but after being on ESPN2 in the Cowboys Classic (vs Oregon State)against the Chick-Fil-A kickoff (LSU vs UNC), they were impressed enough with the ratings to get as many Frogs games as possible this year. They paid large to have both the Baylor (away) and the BYU game (neutral at JerryWorld) moved to Friday to put them in primetime.

Oh, and last year's Rose Bowl is the fourth highest rated program in cable history. Also it's the second highest rated college game in cable history behind Auburn vs Oregon. Top markets were Milwaukee, Birmingham, Columbus OH, and Dallas-Fort Worth.

TCU is drawing lots of eyeballs--while they may be the third biggest dog in their own market (at best) and have a small alumni base, their competitiveness is attracting the casual fan, and if the Big 12 was smart, they would look at what the SEC has done with a high level of competition and small markets.

Also forgot to mention they've found a way to print money. It's insane how much TCU is spending on facilities and their campus. Records aren't public, but in the past decade it's been almost half a billion dollars in some estimates, and all of it came from capital campaigns without a penny coming from the endowment.

I'm not saying the SEC or Big 12 should be chomping at the bit for them, but saying they don't draw viewers is wrong, especially considering their ratings whenever they've been on ESPN in the past 3 seasons. Getting out of the MWC and back onto a nationally available channel will do wonders for TCUs visibility.

Who says TCU even wants to be in the Big 12? The Big 12 is even more unstable than the Big East not to mention the fact that it's a much tougher football conference. TCU could dominate the BE like Florida State dominated the ACC during the '90s and basically get an automatic BCS bowl berth every year.

Oh, and there have been reports from many credible sources that TCU has rebuffed an offer from the Big 12 in the past month.

Meh. The Big East isn't all that, but the Big 12 is a one trick pony for this upcoming year, just as it was last year. TCU would've wiped the floor with the entire conference last year (granted that was TCU's best team since the 1950's), but the recruiting bump from the Big 12 would help a great deal, plus playing more games in the region where our recruits come from.

The big factor is not wanting to be in a conference with unequal revenue distribution. We'd rather be an equal in a lesser conference than a peon in a conference with Texas and OU taking a lion's share of the revenue... and it's debatable that the Big East is that much lesser of a conference given the Big 12's instability. Hell, it's been rumored that Mizzou, KState, and Kansas may jump ship to the Big East if Mizzou doesn't get picked up by the SEC in this round of musical chairs--that's how unstable the conference is. Even Kansas' president has admitted to being in constant contact with John Marinatto, the Big East commish.

I see, so when UT breaks out the money excuse in the media, it's cool. But when A&M wants to go to a different conference because they want a better revenue deal, they're whiny scared pouting bitches?

A couple of guys on KLBJ this morning were complaining about the supposed t-shirt fans and how you can only criticize and judge a school that you actually attended. Perhaps these people are indeed Horn fans but went to other schools for any number of reasons be it money, family, a certain major, etc....
