interesting that uscjr. joined during the season. seems like the start of the season is the deadline for aTm.

we weren't in a conference that competed in football, so there were no contracts to break. we were in the Metro w/ FSU, but that more for scheduling and to get automatic bids for basketball.

Good point. Carolina had nobody to piss off, nobody to get sued by when joining.

The SEC didn't ask schools to join, they basically announced that they were looking to expand and asked for applications.

As I recall, the SEC was targeting (courting) Texas A&M and FSU. At the time, FSU was THE dominant program in football. But FSU (Bowden) said frick the SEC, we're a dominant team as an independent and always will be. (He was afraid of playing good competitive teams every week.) Then Florida State leaves the Metro (non-football conference) joins the ACC the next year, I guess thinking they'd dominate that conference.

Texas A&M was thwarted by the Texas legislature, so they swore their allegiance to the SWC. In 1994, the SWC folded when Texas, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Texas Tech left to join the Big 8 which became the Big 12. The word was that A&M wasn't allowed to do anything without Texas included (maybe that's why A&M is so pissed off these days.)

Maybe some of the piggies here can give more background on their jump to the SEC.

I don't know the particulars, but according to Broyles, we were one of the first choices for the SEC. Apparently we had been in touch about it for several years.

The SEC had considered going to 14 teams back then, so its possible that Texas, TxA&M, Arkansas and FSU were the four they originally had in mind.

Simply due to Carolina joining later (and the fact that they had basically nothing to work out with an existing conference) makes me believe that they might not have been at the top of the list.

That's not a flame towards Carolina, as I like having them in the league. Its just the best my feeble mind can muster right now.

I'd like to add that I am glad we jumped when we did. It was a big deal and not a small decision.

To this day, we have still played Texas more times in football than we have played anybody else.

We left behind all that was familiar to us, traditions, trips, hates, rivalries, etc in order to join the SEC. It was a big deal.

Try to imagine your team doing the same...pretty crazy when you think about it.

When was the first year in league play for Arkansas and South Carolina? 1991 or 1992

Metro coulda been a solid football conference. FSU, Virginia Tech, USC, UL, Cincy, even Georgia Tech at one point.

Yes, A&M was blocked to join the SEC then

We were on top of our game at that point too. Goddammit I'm getting mad just thinking about it. Jackie Sherrill stated as early as the 70's I believe that he thought A&M belonged in the SEC.

Here's to hoping he's finally right

Here's a challenge for the new guys (Arkansas and Carolina):

Go to your school library and look up old newspaper articles on microfilm regarding the jump to the SEC and post some of them here.

I'm curious to read about the reactions when it was announced (or discussed prior to the announcement).

ETA: I'm going to post this in the SEC Rant too

Apparently Arkansas' AD at the time, Frank Broyles, had convinced UT and A&M to break away from the SWC with Arkansas and join the SEC.

The Texas legislature got involved and blocked the moved or put enough pressure on the Texas schools to not make the move.

That was a huge mistake and time has proven me right.

Since we lack any rival competition close by I always thought it would be cool to be in a division with a7m, ut, arkansas and ou.

FSU petitioned the SEC for 30 years beginning in 1960. Their biggest advocate was Florida who wanted FSU and Miami in the SEC. The idea went nowhere until 1990, when FSU was offered SEC membership. That year FSU was also offered by the ACC and Big East. After three decades of SEC rejection and knowing they could not dominate in our conference FSU cast its lot with the ACC.
