Because other drugs only provide relief from symptoms, researchers are excited about the possibility of a drug that could protect and restore degenerating neurons affected by Parkinson's. Also, if the drug is effective, it could be made available to patients relatively quickly, said Jeffrey MacKeigan, of the Van Andel Research Institute.

The possibility of drug restoring degenerative neurons is farther away than this article leads you to believe; unfortunately.
Still, the drugs currently available will allow Krags to be a great coach for a long time.

Hope so. Not for any football reasons, but considering his wife has health issues, this would be huge for them.........and for anyone suffering with Parkinson's.

True.
And there are some quite promising avenues of research being done on Parkinson's. I expect that within 10 years we'll have some potent new tools in the toolkit.

My mother has been diagnosed with Parkinson's for almost 20 yrs and she is in her early 80s now and rockin along. At first she couldn't even hold a hair brush to brush her hair and she used to have a lot of trouble eating without getting choked. But newer meds have helped her a lot in recent yrs. Yes, there's hope.

Yeah, alzheimers would also be fixed. That's not happening very soon.

I will add that after the initial diagnosis most people lead completely normal lives for years with these new meds before symptoms become a problem. He could coach as much as he wanted if he absolutely needed to right now, but traveling a lot to see specialists ASAP is obviously more important.
