The nickel package would most likely include MC,TS at the outside corners and TM or Ron Brooks(the forgotten man) at the nickleback slot. With Taylor and Reid or Loston at the safety spots. IMHO. But, you could possibly see Taylor Reid and Loston in the nickel depending on the situation (very rare).

great explanation. also explains why PP was so great. yes, bama and julio completed a lot of passes against him, but they were timing routes. if the offensive timing is perfect, the CB will have to allow the pass to be caught (IF he's in the correct position) and instantly make the tackle. bama was on but julio wasn't much of a factor because he was wrapped up immediately and we contained their running game BECAUSE PP could one-on-one with julio.

Nah, I don't know about offense so I have no clue.

Traditional 4-2-5

When it comes to defense, I know a good bit.

just messing with you. pet peeve of mine is when ppl gt on here and say power I when they're talking plain ol' i-formation. similar with how someone mentions 4-2-5 and I think more of the 3 safety look (Roman/Raion/Leblanc in 97 anyone?). I don't really call nickel 4-2-5.

as for TM vs. Simon, I really hadn't seen enough of TM as a true outside CB (vs. nickelback) to say who's better out there. I think some ppl may sell him a bit short there (no pun intended). I just like that we have a few guys who look like they can really cover and the flexibility to get em all out there.

Word it how you want, but he's not at NB because that's where we "need" him, but rather because he is NOT the 2nd best CB, otherwise he would be the #2 CB.

I don't think we've seen enough of them at corner to fully know, but having TM at nickel gives the team a significant advantage because of his blitzing ability. I won't be surprised to see him at corner in base sets through. His body control is off the charts, he can easily disrupt routes and use the sideline to his advantage.

Wow, TLDR. Suffice it to say that Simon is better in coverage and showed as much in the Spring game. Didn't need a novel to write that.

OP... AWESOME! TM is a true NB! Can't wait to see him killing quarterbacks again this year.

Mathieu will get a ton of snaps anyway, this whole debate is dumb IMO.

You will soon see that Tyrann Mathieu is the best cornerback on the team. Last year it was the same doubt. Why is a 5'9 corner offered a scholarship. Then look at the followers he's gained. You will see when Simon gets torched and Tyrann go in and lock that side the field down.

I'd prefer nobody gets torched and everyone plays well, how's about that, Piru Love?

Weren't you the one flaming people who said Simon should start at CB over TM...

This played out exactly how I thought it would in the reasoning why TM would stay at nickel and Simon start.

I love how you think you are an lsu fan but you're hoping Simon gets torched

You didn't watch the Spring game, did you?

Simon = freak. He's like 6'4", runs stride for stride with receivers, and has an incredible wing span that he uses to break up passes.

He broke up at least two sure TDs in the Spring game, simply because of his wing span.

He is better at covering the deep ball than Mathieu. This isn't really that difficult to understand. Mathieu is at his best playing the nickel.

Nickel is called nickel and not 4-2-5

4-2-5 is simply the personnel on the field. 4 DL, 2 LB, 5 DB

It could be 3 CB's or 3 S's. 4-2-5 doesnt have to mean 3 S's.

I am in Simon's corner too. Don't get me misunderstood. All I'm saying is at this point Simon is being Annointed. It's kinda reminding me of the Tony Romo sagga.

This is my opinion. He has not proven himself to the magnitude of praise he's getting. He have to show me. Game time. Seems like all he's getting this praise for is his measurements. If that's the case why not put Reuben Randle at corner.

He has played minimum last year. BTW he was torched the play before for the swat pass on Julio for the Bama game. So where are you all getting this hype from. I'm just saying, let me in so I can hop on the bandwagon too. That pick in the Cotton Bowl was thrown right to him. Wow! That was magnificent.

Now all of a sudden he is being compared to PP7. WTF? Don't disrespect young amazing and TM7. You have people on here saying he will be in the NFL. This shite is getting out of hand. TM7, PP7, Claiborne have earned their stripes. Thats what I'm saying.

Simon has not.

Great as a 5'9 CB he is, even he is human. I certainly wouldn't want to see a 5'9 CB running down the field with Alshon Jeffries only to see him get abused simply because of the height difference. 6'5 against 5'9. Not sure he'd need to put much effort in catching the ball at the highest point...and if he did, would be impossible for TM to do anything about it. With Simon, you have that opportunity because he is much taller with longer arms. The balls he slapped down in the spring game are prime example. The one JJ threw to RR was a well thrown deep ball. Simon just reached around him and made the play. A normal DB probably couldn't make that play because they don't have the arm span Simon has...

Simply put.. Tyrann has been put in a position where he can easily succeed and do what he does best.
