Rome, Florence Eateries

Heading across the pond next week and wondering if anyone has recommendations for local, mid-range restaurants in Rome and Florence, Italy.

I went to Florence for my senior trip and just remembering that pretty much everything I ate there was amazing. I liked Florence quite a bit more than Rome actually.

In Florence, my favorite little restaurant is Antica Trattoria da Tito. They serve traditional Tuscan food. The chef/owner is a nice guy that will help you navigate the menu and pair wines with your food. Also,unlimited Limoncello after dinner. That usually got us stumbling back to the hotel afterward.

I don't remember exactly where I ate, but I stayed in Florence 4-5 days and absolutely loved it.
Incredible city. Be sure to go across the river on top of the hill for a skyline view!

My favorite place in Florence was Trattoria Za Za. Very reasonable, good food, good atmosphere.

And don't forget the gelato. Florence has the best gelato! The three best places in town were Grom, Carabe, and Gelateria dei Neri. Best gelato I had in rome was at Giolitti. Also, if you happen to make a day trip to Montalcino to sip on some Brunello, while you're out there, try the biscottino flavor gelato. It's basically a cream-flavored gelato with a locally made biscotti. It's excellent.
Check out the local markets, too. Head to Campo dei Fiori when you're in Rome and haggle for some parmigiano-reggiano, salami, and proscuitto. I'd grab something and keep it in my backpack while we walked about, then stop somewhere with a fantastic view, maybe grab a bottle of wine, and enjoy.

Agreed, Florence was a great city and I enjoyed my time there much better than Rome. Osteria La Congrega in Florence had an amazing atmosphere. It literally felt like you were eating in some families living room. The night we went, there was a very heated conversation going on with one of the owners and another, what appeared to be a regular, patron. Lots of LOUD Italian and hand movements. Cool place.
I don't really have a lot of memories of food in Rome, however, everywhere we went the food was good.
On your way from Florence to Rome, stop by some of the little hilltop towns in Tuscany. That is where you will find the hidden gems.

In Rome:
Try La Taverna del Ghetto in the Jewish section on Via del Portico di Ottavia. Its a couple of blocks from the Capitoline Hill. Make sure you try the Carciofo alla Giudia (Jewish-style Artichokes).

Another great restaurant is Ristorante La Vecchia Locanda located on Via Vicolo Sinibaldi. It's a short walk from the Pantheon. I had the Trippa alla Romana but everything we had there was superb: Ristorante La Vecchia Locanda

Almost all meals in Florence were very good, but by far, the best meal I have had in my life was at this restaurant: LINK
It is off of the tourist path and hard to find because they have no sign and it doesn't look like a restaurant. Did not see many tourists in there at all and our waiter did not speak English like they did at most other restaurants, so we just let him choose for us. We had Bistecca at a few restaurants in Florence, but this one was the best.
