it is illegal in the NFL, and it is only legal in college if you catch the ball...which would be damn near impossible imo after you already have to clear at least 10 feet to have a chance.
If you are up by three and the opponent is going to try a 60 yard field goal and the kicker kicks it low, you best be putting a player back there to swat it away if it only costs you two points. Right? You still win by one point even if you manage to swat a good field goal away.

no...I'd rather try to block it at the line in that situation. a 60 yard kick has to have a very low trajectory. At the line, you may need to only clear about 8 feet to block it, while at the goalpost, you'd have to clear at least 10 feet and make a good read on where the ball is going to go and time your jump perfectly, etc...

Interview with Kenny Irons

Q: If you had to be stranded on a deserted island for one month, which one of your teammates would you want to bring with you and why?
A: “I would bring Tre Smith because he is the most unique person ever. He thinks of the most amazing things. If we were on a deserted island we would probably sit around and think about what he brought up yesterday. He said ‘What if a team was on the 50-yard line and they had to kick a field goal to win the game and you had somebody like Carl Stewart who has a 42-inch vertical? If the team kicks the ball and they are barely going to make it and it is just going to graze inside the goalpost and you have Carl jump up and block it before it gets there, would that be OK? And would they count that? What could they do? That is a really good question because there is no goaltending in football so they couldn’t do anything about it because Carl just jumps up and blocks it.’ Tre is just wild and he is exciting and good to be around so I would bring Tre Smith.”

Hell, I think they should lower the crossbar by a foot just to make it more common.

. However, if it were legal teams would already be doing it
I'm not sure there are guys who can jump 12ft+. With the goal post at 10ft, there are barely any FGs that hit the crossbar and go in. Therefore a guy would have to time his jump just right to be able to get over 12ft in the air in order to have a chance at swatting a FG that is sneaking by just over the post. MUCH harder and probably not feasible for most ppl in the league.

You have 10 people at the line and your highest vertical or tallest player at the back of the endzone...I think it's doable.

but there are 9 people at the line. Your chances of blocking a kick 11 on 9 is much higher than blocking a kick going over the crossbar. You want a quick guy coming off the edge opposite the holder and a guy with a great vert about 2 yards off the LOS to get a slight move forward into a jump to block it there.

Are you suggesting changing the defensive lineup to where you don't have 10 men on the line but instead have 9 men on the line and one in the back and one deep?
