Yeah but we can't really call him a miss can we? I mean, we were recruiting Clayton about as much as you can and we simply passed on Lefors. He was a hell of a college player though production wise.

Hell if we go by that criteria we should throw Mike Wallace out there too.

I was talking more along the lines of our conversation than the basis of the OP.

quote:Yes, we were going after him very strong and if your going off of a recruits hype in high school yes he was #2 in the country to Jimmy Clausen who was crowned a 10 year QB can't miss prospect.
Meh........did we really MISS him and was he a CAN'T miss?

Shows you how much recruiting services know. Neither one of them deserved that ranking in hindsight.

I don't think this kid makes it through the fall semester.

He spurned LSU and yes, we ABSOLUTELY wanted him. He didn't hurt LSU by not coming and in retrospect he wasn't a "can't miss", but the question wasn't whether or not it hurt LSU but a can't miss that spurned us. Joe McKnight is the answer
And as far as high school prospects went, he was pretty much a can't miss who turned out to be average in a crowded USC backfield.

How wasn't he a miss when he missed?
USC's backfield being "crowded" had no bearing on how he turned out. The kid was their #1 RB for 2 and a half years and he was given every possible chance to shine. He just more or less flickered.
Don't get me wrong, he was alright. At times, he showed flashes, but overall.....the kid was no where NEAR the 5*, #2 prospect in the country, RB that everyone expected him to be.
I think a lower Rivals250 would have sufficed and his performance in college would have warranted it.
Hence, he wasn't a "can't miss."

mckinght>ridley
however he wasn't a huge loss, i agree
in the Pac 10, you cant compare a Pac10 RB's stats to a SEC RB's stats.

...and two completely different RB's.
McKnight was given space to work with....Ridlay was the between the tackles.....
How that is even brought into the conversation, I don't know.

Then that isn't the definition of a "Can't Miss" IMO......
Warrick Dunn
Travis Minor
Ed Reed
Peyton Manning
These are those types of guys.....JM was just "meh".......would have been nice to have him but not a wow.

Battle was the starter at QB and broke a bone in his throwing arm. He came back to play WR. He would have been a WR at LSU. He is still in the league with the Pittsburg.

These are all football...then there's basketball.

I'm going with Joe McKnight. And I personally believe if he would've went to LSU he would have played Cornerback/Return Specialist and his college career would've been very different.
