If a gun has been passed down to you from family

but you find out that it was never registered properly, what are the steps to getting it registered? Could there be repercussions?

This needs to be registered I believe. No regustration for ANY firearms?

If you are talking about a war trophy type gun. I.E. a machine gun grandpa brought back from WWII there is no way to get it legally in your name. Better off keeping it hidden....
ETA: I believe they did a one time amnesty to register them at one time but there is nothing in effect like that today.

Not unless it is a machine gun, silencer, short barreled rifle, short barreled shotgun or destructive device.

bayoudude is right, there is no registration except for class 3 weapons (short barrel shotguns/rifles, suppressors, machine guns, etc).
