We have a critter that's digging holes in the garden everywhere, even neighbor across street was complaining. I don't have time to judge him in the wee hours of the night considering I need to sleep but what can i trap it with?

Just your normal small game wire trap, use fresh fruit or earthworms as bait.
If you use fruit, you're liable to catch a coon or possum.

They move just before daybreak, cap his arse.

I have caught several in my backyard just using a small live trap with some 2 x 8s on each side for wings. They follow the boards straight in.

Judge to the face.
Too weak to cause real damage anywhere else.

Little hesitant to shoot a firearm in a fully residential neighborhood possibly aiming at the general direction of my house.

I'm going to hang this fricker off my front porch after I catch him as a warning to all the other armadillo fricks not to frick with this garden.

This. I've caught several this year the same way. No bait, just funnel the little idiots into the trap. I've also used a couple of old arrows with cheap broadheads to take out a few. Make sure you don't skip it off his back though.

The last three I killed were in the late afternoon. Just before the sun went all the way down. I crept up within 20ft and blasted a hole in'em with #6 20 gauge.

I see them right after dark often. Just search then and cath him with your hands.

how much damage can a shovel do to an armadillo?

AlxTgr has perfected the Armadillo field goal kick. it's impressive seeing an armadillo fly 3'-4' in the air. Just get him a 6pk of Bud Light and he will demonstrate for you.
