Did this make it over here yesterday?
Guy deals a pretty heavy hand to Simmons.
Never been a Simmons fans, and strongly agree with his assertion that the whole "ESPN holds me back!" shite from Simmons is a phony act to make them appear "cutting edge."

I like Simmons and stopped reading this guy's article two paragraphs in.
The reasons I like Simmons have nothing to do with being "cutting edge" btw. I'm guessing that he has many critics who say things like "He's not as edgy as he thinks he is," when in fact Simmons has never claimed to be edgy.

His entire MO is that he's the outsider. He's the kid at the big boy's table.
He doesn't have to say he's edgy. He doesn't play that pure antagonist role like a Whitlock, but he definitely plays up his whole "I'm writing as a fan, not as a writer" persona. That has a place, for sure, but I don't think it makes him original or brilliant.

Well I'd agree.
I just meant he tries to act like he's the only one who thinks sports are fun and cool and hip and all these other sports guys, especially guys who really like advanced stats, are just soul sucking drainos.

that guy's entire essay is missing one key point that pretty much shits all over it:
Simmons is the Editor of Grantland, not the writer of Grantland
So deconstructing Simmons like he did is like deconstructing Chicken's posts in an effort to diminish the content of tigerdroppings.com

He can be funny, but it can come off like hes trying too hard to not be "that guy"
I think KSK is hilarious, been reading it for years.
never gets old
I bet I made that Pats cheerleader wet her panties with that throw

Eh.
The site has his name plastered all over it. The article is more about Simmons' rise to success, his image, how he presents himself etc. Editor/writer is kind of a meaningless distinction in this regard, IMO.

All of the quoted material is worth reading, especially the last quotation.
quote:
Finally, there's the name, which honors Rice, the man who kicked off the so-called Golden Age of sportswriting and who's remembered today for the heroic portraits and demi-deifications he crafted for players like Babe Ruth and sports programs like Notre Dame. Not a single person Simmons has allegedly buttonholed for his site writes anything like Grantland Rice (few are even sports journalists), and many of his contributors would likely ridicule anyone who did. In fact, the current sports journalist most prone to balancing spectacle and poesy, to unselfconsciously championing the rigors of sport and the triumph of the human spirit, is Rick Reilly, a man Simmons has probably spent half his career obliquely verbally shitting on.
quote:
No one can deny his success or his canniness in adopting an everyman stance about sports while peppering his analogies and descriptions with mainstream pop-cultural references aimed at the coveted 18-35 demographic that (at the time) was steeped in late-1970s and 1980s nostalgia. The problem Simmons makes is forgetting that he was one of hundreds or even thousands who could have taken the same ball and run with it.
quote:
You'd think for a fan of Malcolm Gladwell's (also a Grantland writer) glib and unscientific trash that Simmons might have read Outliers and felt a glimmer of recognition. In Gladwell's mind, Bill Gates became a programming titan because he got to practice writing code and lived in a neighborhood prosperous enough to provide him with the machinery to run programs. Taking advantage of AOL's internal advertising structure, being an intern at the Herald, being able to practice there and then having its networking machinery (and mavens!—think Gladwell's The Tipping Point!), as well as a local population ready to be targeted for links about local sports was nothing short of wonderfully serendipitous.
quote:
Allegedly it's a serious sports website maintained by a man whose critical rigorousness about sports can often be measured by going to the IMDB "memorable quotes" page for a movie and trying to apply it to some random category like "interceptions made by New England Patriots, 2001-2010."
quote:
Bill Simmons is to Grantland Rice what Tucker Max is to Hunter Thompson.

Anyone read the article he linked about Klosterman?
Seemed like an evisceration, but I haven't gotten to read it.
How can anyone dislike Klosterman that much!??

What???? He has the guys from Football outsiders on all the time and talks about advanced baseball stats every now and then. Fwiw, his podcast would be a complete bust without Jack-O.

The one thing about Grantland is that they have really hyped up their writers and contributors. Other than huge names like Eggers, Gladwell, and Klosterman who will probably not do the bulk of the work, the rest of the staff is 25-year olds who have had 2 internships and placed in a journalism contest while in college.

His entire MO is that he's the outsider.
People knock him about everything but his actual writing. That means everybody pretty much agrees he's a good writer. Good enough for me.
Why should I care if 1000s of writers could have done the same thing as Simmons? Why should I wan to read an article about Simmons written by a guy who doesn't like Simmons? I like sports, not envy.

I do intesnely dislike Simmons' "ESPN is holding me back" schitck. It is, without a doubt, the worst thing about his writing. I do like Simmons, and his piece on Phil Jackson today is outstanding, but he does tend to drift into laziness and near Mad Libs columns.
Mainly, he's not nearly as knowledgable as he thinks. I just wish he was more curious about things. He's got a schtick and he just sticks with it.

I think he tries to pass himself off as an insightful gambler when really he's just a guy who plays wild hunches. Which is fine, but he invites guys like the FO guys, and then only takes the surface lessons and doesn't seem real interested in learning anything. He looks for support, not illumination.
I dothink he's a good writer, especially when he gets outside of his comfort zone. That column from today is wonderful. And Klosterman brings out the best in Simmons because he calls him on his crap in a friendly way.

The most ironic part of that whole thinly veiled envious cry-baby piece is that simply mentioning Simmons name will probably make it one of the more popular articles on that site.
Sure his shtick can get old. There are plenty of articles/websites that I don't find appealing. Guess what? I don't read them.
