PROTOCOL...do you know what it is??
Posted on 5/12/11 at 7:54 pm to cpeter9
Because there is no reason to yet, and reasons not to....

I think he like most people want to know what that protocol is!
Do you know what THAT is??

1.5 million cubic feet of water per second past Morganza before opening it is even seriously considered.

But I mean, surely opening it now would reduce the water level sitting on the levees in BR (which I understand the length of time increases the likelihood of failure)? At the same time, everything in the spillway will be flooded at some point anyhow.

Friend of mine works for corps, said if they don't open Saturday it will open itself basically via topping. Plan on this being done Saturday

It would reduce it by like a foot or two
But the BR levees are in zero danger right now. So, no reason to do it yet.
It hasnt even gotten to the 08 levels get I think...

And if the duration matters, remember that you increase it for the weaker levees further south by opening it earlier...

Because Maj.Gen. Michael Walsh has balls the size of grapefruits. He makes Les Miles jealous. National Weather Service projections are fallible and he knows it. Walsh is not going to intentionally flood anyone until it is absolutely necessary and he will wait until the latest possible moment to do it.

How big are his balls gonna look when a levee fails?
Posted on 5/12/11 at 9:48 pm to udtiger
Exactly I'm with udtiger, we already know that without any additional rain that Morganza WILL HAVE TO BE opened. The only plausible reason not to open it now that I can see is fear that they may not be able to close it if it scours or something else time related.

THe correct answer is that the protocol is to consider opening once the flow reaches 1.5 mil cfs.

I asked myself that very question when he waited to activate the Birds Point - New Madrid Floodway. Had the Commerce levee in Missouri failed then the Mississippi River would have flooded all the way to Helena, Arkansas. Had I been in Walsh's position then I would have activated the BPNM Floodway a week earlier than he did if for no other reason than just to cover my arse.
I have met Walsh. I have talked with him. Trust me when I tell you that his primary interest is for people's lives and property. At least that is what I believe.
There are times when easy answers are not available. The man is making unimaginably difficult decisions. My view based on nothing more than personal observation is that thus far Maj.Gen. Walsh has done a damn good job.

Trigger point to open Morganza Floodway is 1.5 million cubic feet per second (cfs) at Red River Landing. (This equates to AAPRX 60 ft on the gauge)
