how does drafting a run first QB with less than 300 career passes and multiple maturity issues, with a rookie defensive minded head coach, a year after you picked a QB in the second round 1st overall sound like a good idea????!!! especially if you find out clausen really does suck, you'd have LUCK in your lap next year? unreal brothers and MARK THE DRIVEMANS WORDSm: canny cam will not be the opening day starter in 2016

I don't think Newton will work out either. The risk is worth the reward though. There are no cannot miss prospects at other positions worth no 1 overall pick money (ie pp7 is a cannot miss prospect but no cb should get that kind of money).

I think you draft Von Miller and be done with it.

I mean you just cant pass on icons/entertainers with average accuracy in a non spread offense

so you would rather throw money at a maybe prospect, at best... rather than overpay a player you are sure is gonna be really good?

that makes no sense. miller, dareus, pp7, aj green are all superior players to cam and have low bust possibility.

take ANY of those players over cam. especially if you drafted a QB last year in the top 40 picks.

JMO and a lot of poorly run teams seem to have the opposite philosophy

Your first (and probably second) round pick should be as safe of a pick as possible... unless you are picking near the end of the first round and a top five talent drops into your lap... just take the safest player possible and be done with it

If you want to reach then reach in the later rounds

this is verbatim what bill parcels said. its why the dolphins passed on matt ryan and took jake long.

OL and DL have a smaller bust % than QB.

now that didnt work out great for them, but jake long is a VERY good left tackle. matt ryan could have easily been a bust.

Everyone seems to think so.

Can teams discuss the parameters of deals as they could in the past? Not sure due to lockout.

I personally would rather select Mallett over Newton if I was going to make him the almost immediate starter. Mallett has played longer and has been learning in an offense similar in complexity to the pros.

It isn't clear to me whether there is a rookie salary cap for this years first round picks... I assume there will be

Sounds like teams are being allowed to trade draft picks tho... although free agent signings are a "not yet"

Honestly, I'm beginning to think Newton is going to be a good pick.

Highest ceiling in the draft. He's dumb, but so are 99% of his peers. You can't ignore the success he has had (an undefeated season achieved almost solely from his doing in the parity of today's CFB). I question his support system, his aspirations, but I don't think anyone can question his work ethic or desire to succeed. If the Panthers are cognizant of his strengths and weaknesses and develop a system that sets him up for success, he will succeed.

cam is vince young, not mike vick. if vince couldnt make it on a run first team with a FANTASTIC RB, how is cam?

Why wouldn't they pick him? They not only get a QB, but an entertainer AND an icon!!!

on carolina I'm not sure a sitting duck will do very well

short term I think Cam does better than Mallet would on the Panthers... long term I agree Mallett could easily be the better choice... if we're being honest it is probably 50/50 on either one being a real NFL QB five years from now

Cam > Vince Young

And we all know a large part of Young's demise is his lack of dedication and the culture in which he came from (UT).
