Chennai, India restaurants

I'm in Chennai for work right now... and it looks like we'll be on our own for dinner most days.
Have any of you foodies been out here? Any recommendations?
We've eaten at hotel restaurants the past 3 nights (there's like 5 restaurants in our hotel) but I imagine we're going to venture out to try some different things eventually
non-indian restaurants are welcome as well, as I'm sure we'll want something less alien eventually

This is what I would do as well.
Near the end of the trip, that is.

...unless you want to end up the can for the rest of your trip...I would strongly recommend sticking with the hotel restaurants!!!!! India is not a place to be adventurous dining out.

our hosts are supposed to be taking us out somewhere really nice tonight.. we'll see how that goes.. but it gets us out of the hotel for an evening at least.
we tried the 4th restaurant in the hotel last night... it's kinda funny that the buffet lunch provided at work has been better than 3/4 restaurants in the hotel
and they gave us Domino's pizza too because they were afraid we wouldn't like the other food they provided... the toppings were chicken and corn

Glad you're getting away from the hotel for a meal. I'm sure it'll prove to be your best one, especially if your hosts are locals.

the place they brought us to was called "Barbeque Nation"
It was an Indian attempt at a Texas de Brazil... without the steak, obviously. There was shrimp, fish, chicken, and lamb options... all were good but very spicy, which of course was expected.
The really weird part though is they had the meal backwards. You started out with the barrage of meats, and then you went to the buffet for what seemed like the filler.. which was more or less typical (southern) Indian fare.. lots of stuff I can't really name, some rice dishes and sauces. One dish struck me as very similar to seafood gumbo, and would have been a lot more delicious if I hadn't already gorged myself on the meat.
Anyway I ate way too much and my stomach kind of hurts this morning as a result (it's about 7 am here)

also.. at the restaurant last night.. there was a sign on the table that said they added a 4% gratuity to your bill and they advised against tipping more
It kinda made me feel out of place for tipping 500 rupees on an 1100 rupee bill the night before

just when I thought you were surprising me even more with your worldliness
Do you know people who've been? Or are you looking at a website?

Nah...I just looked at some websites...that place got some good reviews...

yeah we'll probably hit Copper Chimney this week.
We were in Pondicherry and ate at Le Club last night... eating French food was a welcome break from the massive amounts of Indian food we've been gorging on for the past week.

Well I'm not keeping it as real over here but I just had some leftover butter chicken from Taj Mahal
Posted on 4/24/11 at 8:56 pm to Powerman
I'll probably end up taking the gf over to Taj Mahal like a week after I get back
I'll need some recuperation time from Indian food and she'll need an excuse to wear the sari I bought her

You can get some saris at Fashion India in Baton Rouge as well FWIW
I'm sure they have a much better selection over there though.

haha... yeah... shopping in India is fricking cool if you're white
all the salespeople know you have money so they're throwing all their wares in front of you... we probably looked at 50 saris before I picked one.. and I was only looking at blue saris... the prices ranged from 5000 rupees (a little over 100 dollars.. about 45:1) to 18000... and I didn't look at the really cheap ones that were about 2500-5000
same basic story at the jewelry store we went to.. and the stonecarving store in Mahabalipuram... so much fun to shop here
