LINK

1. Bill Belichick, New England Patriots
2. Mike Tomlin, Pittsburgh Steelers
3. Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles
4. Mike McCarthy, Green Bay Packers
5. Sean Payton, New Orleans Saints
6. Tom Coughlin, New York Giants
7. Rex Ryan, New York Jets
8. Lovie Smith, Chicago Bears
9. Mike Smith, Atlanta Falcons
10. M. Shanahan, Washington Redskins
10. John Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens

I think Coughlin is rated a little high and I'm not too fond of Lovie Smith either. According to Freddy Coleman on ESPN Radio, Payton is the only one on this list that has ever played a down on the field. Interesting.

Was thinking the same thing. Apparently we are looking at an entire body of work, and not just recent achievements. Otherwise, Mikey wouldn't have made the list.

Hasn't he been on the hot seat the last few seasons? Kind of crazy to have him at #8 if so.

He did have a good season last year though.

Nothing really. Just an interesting topic for discussion.

coaching is about winning, so andy reid is great, but no way you put him over coaches who have won it all.

Sean Payton is light years ahead of andy reid, and mcarthy's offense does not hold a candle to the high output and consistency of SP.

Belichick
Tomlin
Payton
McCarthy
Reid
Rex Ryan
Mike Smith
Lovie Smith
John Harbaugh
Raheem Morris

I think right now Payton and McCarthy on pretty even ground, but I think Payton's still ahead because of such a huge turnaround for the Saints.
And I think the Bucs with Morris are gonna be dangerous pretty soon.

good point, I agree, at this point Reid is a nominee for the best coaches who haven't won a Super Bowl.

Along with-

Jeff Fisher
Bud Grant
Dan Reeves
Marty Schottenheimer
George Allen

To me it's just more proof that the whole notion that one has to play the game to know or cmment on it is stupid.

One of the greatest players Mike Singletary was one of the weakest Xs and Os coach of the last 20 years.

A caller for The Herd on the radio this morning made an interesting point about this. He was of the opinion that in the NFL, former players make MUCH better position coaches than they do head coaches because of their vast experience at that position. Makes sense to me.

kinda like marginal baseball players are usually better managers... the guys are on the sidelines watching from the coaches viewpoint more than the players viewpoint and can pickup more of the game from there

What exactly does Tomlin do? It sounds silly, but anytime I see him on the sideline during a game or on some behind the scenes deal with ESPN or the NFL network, he is walking around with his hands in his pockets joking around with Big Ben or chatting it up. Is he just a figurehead?

yes. he is a defensive guy and dick LeBeau runs the defense.

his game managing skills are off the charts terrible. see green bay 2009.

There's Belichick then a massive gap, then there's Reid and Ryan. Payton and McCarthy are decent. You can replace Tomlin's name with Dick Lebeau.

Payton played as a replacement player. I guess that counts.
